    Wheel a week ago and heard a loud metal on rock hit. I was hoping it was my sliders but no suck luck.

    Found this today. What is it, is it important, and what is it for (besides bouncing off rocks)?:


    Hit it pretty good. Red arrows point out where a bolt is being pulled out of the transfer case

    It has something to do with vibrations I think I have only seen it on Autos mine don't have one.

    I think its just a "bump stop" for the TC. The rubber portion is usually facing downward (you bent yours 90*) I'd say just bang it back into place and you're GTG.

    I remember now what it is... Yeah, the rubber busing should be facing down. I speculated it was to help remove the tranny/transfer case (lift point or something). I also remember thinking to myself how its a prime target for rocks :rolleyes:...

    I think JLee is right. Only on autos... :notsure:

    Vibration dampener. When the drivetrain reaches a specific RPM, a resonating vibration can develop. The dampener counteracts the vibration by resonating at an opposite waveform when it vibrates. They also have a similar device that is also placed on some of the ADD front differentials to reduce a similar vibration in the front. It's not factory, but a dealer part that can be installed to reduce vibrations that customers come in complaining about.

    I'm wondering if that's where my vibrations are coming from. It's only at about 2900rpm's and above my case is clocked 10 degrees. I have only noticed in if 5th gear at those rpm's I'm stumped my driveline is balanced and aligned properly.

    Thanks, that's good to know. Coming off then. Probably straighten it out and keep it handy in case I notice vibrations while driving.

    ^^This. it's the same ideas and adding weights to your wheel to balance them. It is there to smooth out drivetrain vibrations on the automatic transmission trucks.
