Set up Claymores in the perimeter of the shop and hope the dumbasses return on another rainy night.

Sorry you have to go through the hassle with insurance and customers and the feeling of being violated.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
Set up a bait car. Put a tracker on it, hidden cameras, and leave the keys on the dash board.

    Hmmmm..... lmao

I like the idea of claymores. However I don't think my insurance would cover it! Haha

Funny thing, one of the cars the customer had a set of keys in the glove box. The glove box was emptied out onto the seat, and the keys were right there. And they only tried to steal the battery.

As for being fenced in, I only lease the shop and property. I talked about fencing it in with the owner over a year ago, but the cost was astronomical. We were looking at $16k for 10 feet tall and barbed wire topping. I may have to look at getting a small area fenced in as well. It wasn't that big of a deal last year because we were able to fit all the cars inside the shop at night. Now we are much busier.

Sorry about your situation, but dogs can make a mess in your workplace and deter some customer. Another thing to keep in mind if the dogs got loose and cause some damage and injuries while you left them unsupervised overnight you're on the hook for the bill.

Camera and fences are better options

Um, never planned on or mentioned having dogs. That was someone else. I don't care for the liability, plus with it not being fenced in, dogs wouldn't work.

It's a shame that it happened. Hope the culprit is caught . It has got me wondering if there is some sort of black market for car batteries, which I can't imagine that there is. Maybe car batteries are used to manufacture narcotics but I have no idea.

Car batteries are sold as "cores" to core collectors. The core collectors drive around to shops in the area and buy cores that have rebuildable value. Batteries, starters, alternators, radiators, catalytic converters, etc. Average is about $10 per battery. Steal about 10 batteries, and you got a quick $100.

My last customer came and checked out her car. She is not the type to take advantage, so I believe her, but about $300 worth of CDs and her CD case, as well as a brand new pair of shoes are missing from her car. Total loss is about $450 now for me. Doesn't even reach my deductible, and that small of a claim I wouldn't want on my insurance anyway. Sucks because a small business like me, that $450 hurts.

If you don't have stairs in your area, ED-209 is a pretty good option haha

But man oh man that is awful Bill..so sorry. Many years ago someone tried to steal my dad's Chevy Citation at a repair lot and it was a similar situation, not enough to claim on insurance for the shop so they fixed it at their cost. UGH

Many years ago (long before it was not nice to damage thieves) our shop did mostly British cars and of course they had soft tops. No sense locking them because they would just cut the top. At the time radios were the choice target I had a fairly good ideal of who the thief was and decided on a plan. Rat traps under the dash. It was not long before the guy was spotted with bandaged fingers.

Yea I agree with everyone on here about cameras. Logitech has a good inexpensive camera system. One thing we did in or neighborhood was simply put up the sign the premises are under video surveillance. Then some fake camera domes placed in strategic areas. This has fixed our issue for the time being.

When I went to college I had no where to keep my tools. So I locked them in my tool box on my truck. Yea so someone liked the tools more than I did. This is why thieves should have a finger cut off for everytime they are caught stealing.
