one other option that I did once is to look for a whole wrecked Tacoma on on CL. Sometimes you can get them very cheap with a good drivetrain, but the vehicle has been totaled. You have to be fast to buy them because they go quickly.

I called on the one I bought 20 minutes after it came out on CL. Drove right over and bought it for $350. I was able to start the engine and hear it run! All I needed was the engine. Parted it out later and got all my money back.

Is CL short for Craig's list? I have done some lookin on Craig's list but haven't seen any wrecked ones.
    Thanks.

I did like Bama, and had my short block, and head rebuilt. I did the tear down, and installed the head, motor, and spent $1500. If I did it again I would get a complete engine from an importer of low mileage Japan engines.

yes CL = Craigslist. If you are not in a rush, this will probably be your cheapest route. or even find someone parting out a truck and buy the engine from them.

As an example, my brother in law just sold a vehicle that was rusty for $650 on CL. Here is the kicker. It had a low mileage, $6000 diesel engine in it. I would have bought it, but it was on the other side of the country.

If it were me, and I had the time, I would keep looking on CL

I just did a search on a CL search engine, and these came up. Each one below is now sold, but it does show that relatively cheap, complete parts trucks do exist (like the one I bought).
