Speedo gear

IIRC, it was very easy to swap. Lost very little gear oil in the process. A teaspoonful.

 

The dealer is telling me that he cannot give me a different gear, that I have to go to a place and get it calibrated. He said toyota does not even calibrate them? Any thoughts? I think I'm going to take a ride down to the dealer tomorow. I hate dealing with the parts guys

 

You can't calibrate it unless you buy an electronic module, told you they wouldn't sell you a gear, dealers are dicks like that. Figure out what tooth count you need and order it online. If you figure out how many teeth you need ill find you somewhere online to get it

 

You were right. They are. He said he had never heard of just swapping the gear. But basically I just need to pull mine, count the teeth, and then how to I figure how many teeth the new gear needs?

 

Yeapp get us the teeth number and we can figure out which one ya need the gear is the cheap part the speedo sensor is the pricey part

 

I'll pull it tomorrow and post. It's dark here florida at the moment and I was at work. But I got tomorrow off! How pricey we talking? I thot it as jus the gear you swapped, didn't know it was the whole sensor? But the 31s are worth it

 

I swapped the whole sensor and gear because the transmission I used for my swap used a cable for the speedometer but had the hole for the sensor just had to extend the wires a little.

Yeah you can just undo the little clip and the gear pops right off slide the new one on and bam

 

Ok. I found mine on the passenger side. Taking it out now

 

Counted twice. 17 teeth!

 

What size motor ?

 

3.4 liter. Stock 4.10 gears

 

17 doesn't sound right. I think the smallest is 28 and largest was 35?

 

So I looked back at my build thread. I originally had a 28 tooth gear (which I still have if someone needs), and went up to a 32 tooth gear. This corrected my speedo that was ~ 13% fast to about dead accurate. So each tooth increase will decrease your speedo reading 3% and vice versa.


I still don't know about that 17 tooth gear you pulled ......

 

He has a prerunner completely different sensor and gears which is why his count seems off

 

The guy at parts said he has 4 different gears of 17 teeth. Idk what gear I need though.

 

Are there any ID marks on the gear? Parts people really have no idea what they're doing even after you give them a vin haha

 

I didn't look. I'd have to pull it again. I stuck it back the tranny cause I had to drive
