At almost three times that mileage I still have original fuel filter and have never adjusted the valves.

I would say that if you have trusted this guy and been happy with his work up to this point , why not just level with him about your suprise at the high estimate

Being in a family of mechanics who are all regularly involved in jobs both big and small I can say that I've NEVER heard of a "tune-up" that involved checking the valves and potentially shimming them. I've heard of shims being used on engines being rebuilt because they had issues but typically if there's nothing wrong you don't want to be breaking that gasket he's talking about, just no reason to at all... And I can say that while I'm the second owner of my truck, I've looked at all the service records (done at my local Toyota dealership) and "checking" the valves was never a part of their maintenance, not at 60k or after..

Just my .02. Working for a dealer there is a link on most Toyota sites where you can see the actual cost and what Toyota recommends based on mileage. Usually under the service tabs. Should also be able to do this on Toyota owners site as well

Sounds like a reasonable price for the work quoted. If you don't want to spend that much, skip the valve adjustment. If you want your engine to be as close to 100% as possible, just fork over the cash.

You must be referring to the Fuel pump "Sock". It's technically a filter but like you said only catches larger stuff mostly.
I was referring to Toyota doing away with the external changeable fuel filter that used to hide up under the head on a 4cyl.

To the OP: It's unlikely that your valves will need shimming at 120K. You may want revisit them at 200K-250K. Most of the high mileage trucks with an RZ or VZ series engines have not had the valves touched.

**You may want to do a little more research on this subject as I have read that Toyota dropped the service requirement on the valve lash check on the 1GR in 2010 anyway. From what I read most of the dealers are not doing lash checks unless the engine has excessive valve train noise.

Taco engines both 4&6 cyl have automatic valve adjusters. They should never need a manual adjustment.

    Check out the build
I paid $680 for mine at the Stealership. That was for the full 120K service, so I don't know where the double charge is coming from.

    Hi all.

The 1GR-FE 4.0 liter V-6 does not have hydraulic lash adjusters. Like a bike engine, the cams open the valves directly. It uses shimless valve lifters so instead of changing coin sized shims to adjust the valve clearance the entire lifter must be changed to one of a different thickness.

This procedure is only done after a tech audibly determines if it is necessary. To me this means 'not very often' since there is no pre-determined schedule to go in and measure with feeler gauges.

Great thread to read considering I will be having my 120k service (done early) before transfer this summer. Thanks for the great info, as always.

Actually he's probably assuming that the 1GR and/or 2TR use the same type of lash adjustment that the VZ and RZ series engines used. So he's basing it off of experience. But he's assuming incorrectly.

Agreed! The 4.0 has to have the lifters replaced as needed as they do not use bucket shims like the older engines. Your mechanic seems to think your tacoma has the older system ( shims ).

The 2.7 has a lash adjustment on the rocker.

All that being said I personally have never seen a Toyota engine need a valve adjustment before the engine needed to be rebuilt.
