The tech is just doing his job and what he has been told at that dealership. If he puts Synthetic oil in and something happens he doesn't want to lose his job. If you don't like what you were told, just move on. At the dealer I go to they go by what is on you oil cap. I just let them do there job. I have trust in the dealership I go to. Other wise I would have not bought it there.

Does your oil cap say conventional?

I asked about upgrading at my first change but was told it would cost something like $50  and that the engine wasn't designed for synthetic.

I've never heard of an engine being designed for the oil. I thought synthetic was just designed to cause less friction than conventional thus helping the engine last longer, and to help coat everything to help upon cold start up? I don't see how or why it would hurt to use synthetic? Other than possibly gunking up the engine anyway.

Also I've heard on here that the 4 cylinders use synthetic, why would some of Toyota's engines run it or be "designed" for it while others not?

I have my service done at the Toyota dealership that sold me the truck. They use Mobile 1 5W30 for my Tacoma , as per my request, no issue and still under warranty.

So if the dealership put 0w20 would you know the difference? Would you know that it's for the 4cyl Tacoma? Would you know if they changed the oil filter? Do you mark your filter? Can you physically see the person working on your truck work on it? Do you know that if it's just an oil change, it's more than likely not being worked on by a Toyota Tech? It's probably someone who's just an Apprentice and getting just above minimum wage working on your oil change. If they were to put in the wrong oil and you didn't notice until after your warranty, how can you prove it? I'm sure you don't check their work before you leave their dealership(what you know how to check I mean). I just think your insight is a little narrow minded. You should be more concerned about what you can't see then what you can. But some people would rather place blame on someone else then blaming it on themselves if something bad were to happen.

You're totally welcome. Anything to make things easier for everyone.

Because at the dealer I go to you pull in the garage and can sit right there and watch, they have two guys go over your whole truck while you wait. They have nothing to hide. Why would you buy a vehicle or take your truck to a dealer or garage you don't trust. This is why I'm lucky. I have about 7 Toyota dealers around my area so I was able to pick who I wanted to service it. Some of you guys only have one to go to, so your stuck.

The tech doesn't own the dealership. He just works there and does or says what his boss tells him. If the tech doesn't like what he is being told or how to do something he has the option to leave and go some where else. Did you ever have a job where your boss told you to do it his way and you knew it was faster and easier to do it another. The boss is the boss, you just work there. You can listen or leave.

You're making it sound like that the dealership is the "end all" to when it comes to getting your vehicle serviced. Maybe you work at a dealership? There are other mechanics out there who are just as qualified to work on your vehicle, like a dealership. But you know, there are people(like here at TW) work on their vehicle and don't take their vehicle to a dealership. So people do have other options, they wouldn't be "stuck" as you say. But either way, you're still narrow minded about it.

When did this become the tech got told by his boss? And why are you advocating for a tech who is wrong? And do you always do what it wrong if you know it's wrong because you got told? Your just pissing ignorance now. Stop while you're ahead.

just an FYI. Pissing matches can also be held via Email if one so desires, or the local bathroom.

Good point. Also, most State and Local laws prohibit pissing matches on the road side, or in view of the public. Your locations laws may vary. From what I understand, In Canada, you can piss on the road. So....If you want a public pissing match, consider a trip to the great white north.
