So, after 13+ years & almost 200K miles, I'm ready to part with my '01 4x4 DCSB and get a '14 DCLB.
Looking to do the deed between now and May.
Anyone have a crystal ball to tell me when will be the best time to get a good deal/best selection?
Am I likely to do much better by dealing with the dealers over the internet or face to face?

Am I really likely to get substantially more by selling direct vs trading in? It's in good shape for its age -- frame was replaced, good rubber, etc. needs front brakes, which I will probably do if I don't buy/sell soon.

When I bought the '01 it took a while to sell my '90, so I sort of lean towards trading in, but I don't think the dealers are all that interested in a trade that old.
KBB says it's worth 5K+ in trade! or 6-8 private sale. If that's true, then private sale is definitely the way to go.

Hit Boch Toyota just south of Boston. They care about volume, no problem getting invoice or under.

Now is usually the time to buy, end of the year. Imo it depends on how many of each year models are on the lot. Of course with end of year the selection will likely be limited.

Selling outright is the way to go if you want to go through the trouble. Of course with a trade you won't pay taxes on the difference.

Do some research, truecar.com and edmunds.com. Have an idea of what you want and what that particular equipped model is selling for. But its hard to bring Toyota down much.

    Good luck!

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
^^ Buy the cheapest one on the lot and have it sitting in your driveway tomorrow night.

Last day of the year is the best day to buy a new car/truck

Salesmen and sales managers are looking to total strong yearly numbers

And more importantly, dealers want to clear the books for inventory taxing purposes

So I have been told as I have no inside info

If it's like MO, you're assessed on Jan 1 for property tax, so you're talking a $600 higher property tax bill next Dec for me if I bought a new truck before EOY. Just something to consider.

Secure the financing before you walk in with a local community bank, make sure to talk to at least 3 of them. Do not discuss payments or interest rate with the dealer, you want to get the bottom line before worrying about that stuff.

My tactic is to negotiate hard, low ball them until they laugh. Leave them a phone number when you walk out. Wait for them to call and make you a new offer. Subtract $2000 from that and go back in to negotiate. Walk out on them again and wait a week before answering or responding to their phone calls. Eventually they will cave and call you in for the low ball offer you made and it will likely be on a Saturday when they can hide the hit they are taking with shear volume of sales being made.

Or use the Costco auto buying program and pay $300 under factory invoice without any haggling. I have bought 3 new cars that way in the last year. Each time I have asked the sales manager after the deal closed whether I could have walked in off the street and duplicated the deal. Two said no. One told me if I had 8 hours to spend on Saturday and Sunday, he would have eventually matched the deal but I could not have gotten the car for less. Works for me.
