Check Engine Light

So my check engine light came on today while driving. I took it to O'Rileys and the code P0440 came out. The dude told me that it has something to do with the a leak somewhere. He recommended me to get a new gas cap since that is the cheapest route to go to see if that is the problem or not.. If anyone has had this code before what did you change or do to get rid of the check engine light?

If a new gas cap doesn't fix the CEL I would try that ^^^ pretty good success rate.

Yeah so my check engine light came back on so I'm going to call the stealership tomorrow to see if they have that part in stock.

 

So it came back on today when I was driving to work. What are my other options to get rid of this problem?

 

Have you checked all the hoses in and around the evap cannister? Make sure they are not cracked, split or dettached.

 

Where's the evap cannister at?

 

On my 2.7, its under the hood on top of the driver-side wheel well. On yours, I think its under the vehicle near the gas tank. You'll have to get a good flashlite and a little dirty to check it out.

 

Check your evaporation valves. My 3.4 L has 3 of them: 2 under hood behind battery, 1 near charcoal canister. When the one by the charcoal canister stopped working for me a couple years ago, I got 0440 and 0446 codes. Its an easy fix.
