Need a new TV for the new house...

    Thinking 55-60"
Been a plasma fan in the past but is there better ? Also had good luck with Panasonic but I'm not brand loyal.

I'm not real savvy on this stuff and it changes every 6 months it seems

I will rule out 3D. Most other options on the table. Budget under 2K. Prefer around one grand ?

I personally would wait for the price to come down on the new 4k ultra HD TVs, especially if I was looking at a bigger TV like you are.

I was in Best Buy recently, Sony is almost gone. Maybe 4 models on the floor. The 84" 4k ultra was awesome at $25,000. Sales guy told me they have sold several of them.

Depends on how bright your viewing room is. My Samsung LED went out a month out of warranty. They would do nothing. Plasma has way better blacks and fluid motion, no digitizing, or motion blur. But they are not quite as bright as LED/LCD. OLED and 4k are the next big thing, however there isn't much being broad cast in those formats yet. I've just read a fantastic article discussing these latest technologies. I'll see can I dig it up. To surmise, most can't tell the difference at normal viewing distances.

Samsung or Vizio. Have both and can honestly say you're splitting hairs between them. Might give the edge to Samsung simply because the menus are easier to navigate.

I wouldn't go out and spend money on a 4k tv. Nothing is being broadcasted in 4k..hell nothing is being broadcasted in 1080p yet only movies on direct tv are.
So going out and buying a 4k and thinking you are getting that resolution you are wrong. Sales people will tell you that because they want you to buy it.

Only thing being shown in 4k is sony 4k player that has movies you have to buy from sony.

Sure the sony tv will up convert to 4k but it's not true 4k. And they have to come out and add the 4k up convert chip. So I would wait.

Top to TVs being sold are samsungs and Panasonic. I repair TVs and I see more samsungs then Panasonics.

Vizio seems to be hit or miss when I talk with people that have them. I would go with a Samsung LED TV. We just bought a 32" model LED (720p) for the kids playroom and it blows away our older 40" Sony LCD (1080p) that is approx 6 years old.

Look for a TV that has 120Hz or faster and 1080p full HD. I've heard great things about the 4k TVs, but I don't believe there is a lot of content that is even taking advantage of the technology yet and the price is still a bit up there. I agree with what tigerfan mentioned above though. There are always huge sales around super bowl time so you can really get some good deals coming up soon.

Well, plasma TVs are going away in a couple of months. Panasonic was the last maker of the Plasma TV and it is getting out. That could be good and bad for buying another Plasma. The good is that prices will be lower from dealers getting rid of old stock. The bad will be buying a TV that will not have any support after a few years.
You can go to C-Net and look at their reviews and recommendations for TVs, and I agree with the others about waiting a little longer if you can. The CES in Las Vegas will be in a couple of weeks and new models will be unveiled, so prices will drop on the present TVs. Good Luck.
