That is a cool web site. I saw a new Hilux double-cab 4x4 on the freeway yesterday. At first I thought it was a Tacoma with some aftermarket tail lights. I got closer to check it out and saw that it was a brand new Hilux with Panama plates, just like the picture. He conveniently got off the exit by my house so I started following him because I wanted to see what powertrain it had, or at least take some pictures after he parked it. But when I got close to it near an intersection, a fire truck came around the corner, the phucker didn't pull over for it, and I lost him. In person, the Hilux looks ridiculously similar in in size and styling to a 2nd gen Tacoma.

I wonder why Toyota even bothers to make a separate mid-size truck for North America. They have a truck plant in Texas, a 2nd gen Tacoma soft riding suspension for wussies, and a heavier-duty Hilux suspension for people who actually do truck things with their truck. WTF, Toyota?

Tacomas just dont really fit in down south much like the hilux wouldnt go over well in north america, we love our big bad ass lookin trucks up here where as in south america a good 80%of the trucks down there are small trucks like the hilux and mistubishi triton and all have extremely similar body styles including the hilux. I was down south for few months this year, I saw one tacoma in sandiago chile and it looked massive compared to the other trucks (not including the odd full size dodge or ford i saw) and after driving the 2012 hilux for a couple weeks and comparing it to my 2012 tacoma, id still always pick the tacoma, nicer interior, nicer exterior, and all around a nicer feeling ride than the hilux. Dont get me wrong id love to have a diesel in the tacoma, but im pretty happy with what it is now.

Hiluxs are cool. They're basically tacomas, except with a bit of a difference so everyone wants one. And diesel. Turbo diesel ftw

Basically a tacoma? You realize the hilux has been in production for 20+ years?

There a company that imports the 25 years or older hilux in to the states. A nice 85 4 door turbo diesel would be awesome

You should start a new thread with pics and details of your truck. I'm really interested in diesel conversions. I was really hoping for a diesel option in 2015 but it's looking less and less likely.

Having a house in San Miguel Allende, Mexico. Hilux are all over the place here in Central Mexico. However it seems...all company P.U.s very plain and usually white in color, no personal, luxury touches. The Tacomas here are just the opposite, personal vehicles that are admired and personalized.

Because the truck/SUV thing is somewhat unique to North America.
Historically, North Americans who do "truck things" buy domestic full size.

Outside of North America, mid-size trucks are the norm and full sized trucks are extremely rare due to narrow roads and fuel costs.

The North American Tacoma is a "hybrid" that provides an SUV-like ride for the wife, and a somewhat usable bed.
Those who do "truck things" in North America represent the minority of sales, even among full-sized trucks.

If you started a build thread called "My diesel Taco" it would probably be the most viewed thread within a couple of months.

Thanks for sharing pics and info, now post some moar:hungry:

I agree with Brandon. Don't worry about finishing everything before you post it. Following along with the process is half the fun. In case you're not aware, it could go here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-builds/

I was just in St. Lucia, and it was pretty cool to see all the Hiluxes. This was the first time I have been out of the country since I became a truck owner, so I never really paid attention to the pickups too much before. It was neat to see all the models we don't get here in the US, especially some of the older ones. Oddly enough, I did see a few full sizes, including two new tundras and a 1500 chevy.

Sad but true. At least Tacomas have infinite aftermarket possibilities.
