Also, if a temp sensor is malfunctioning, it may give false info to the ECU. The sensor would have to still be working, but giving inaccurate readings, to not throw a code.
For example, the sensor reads 80 degrees constantly, and the ECU acts accordingly. You would need a scan tool, to read the actual temp the sensor was reading, and an IR thermometer to confirm.

    I doubt it's the sensor, on a 2012, but it's worth a look.

my 2012 is doing that about once a month. Had my 25,000 mile service yesterday and the service supervisor said they are aware of the problem and toyota is working on a re program for the computers. He said it has to do with the type of fuel you use. The computer adapts to what type of fuel you use and some fuels with high ethanol triggers a flooded engine alert to the computer when starting. It will be a service bulletin not a recall. So you have to check with your dealer periodicly

My '07 does this on occasion as well. About once every 3-4 weeks or so.

Thanks for the info. My 2012 only has a couple thousand miles on it and I've been having this issue quite a bit. I'll check w/ the dealer next time I'm up there.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I will get in touch with my dealer, as mine is only 8 months old. I'm not aware of any 2013 TSB's but I'm sure there are some by now.

Mine just did it today - took 3 tries to start it. Last trip in it was yesterday with nearly the same temps. It happened several times last winter then nothing really through the summer and has happened two or 3 times in the last month. I am starting to wonder if the winter blend is part of the problem? Each time there is a very strong fuel smell in the garage once it finally starts.
