Just an fyi, spider gears move and rotate much more often than you think. A lot of load is placed on those small gears, and short of the ring and pinion gear themselves, is the most common part to break in a rear differential.

She is definitely misinformed on how that kind of thing works. She needs to get a good training class before she opens her mouth again.

Sometimes you just gotta be blunt. Everyone on the net and jobsite always knows best and it just so happens to be something they own.

I even got help from toytec. They claim nothing they sell will void the warranty.

Just got a call from the dealership and they are going to cover the repairs through my warranty.

As they should. I don't get why dealers are so eager to claim voided warranty because of modds that have nothing to do with what is broken.

Not so much the dealerships, but I would defiantly say Toyota customer care. They took care of me.

Hopefully they will finish it tomorrow and I'll get the print off when they are done.

Having worked at a large dealership for several years as a service advisor, I can tell you that the manufacturer does pay the dealership to perform warranty work. However, the dealership can assume some responsibility under certain circumstances and that scares them. Every warranty repair has to be approved before payment to the dealership is actually made. You roll up in a stock vehicle, under warranty, with an issue...like a CEL, for example. The dealership will make that repair first and submit the claim afterwards because they know there is a near 100% chance they will be reimbursed for it. Very simple and cut and dry. Happens countless times a day at all dealerships. However, someone rolls up in a vehicle, under warranty, but modified just enough to make the service department nervous....this is where the trouble starts. The dealership knows that if they make the repair they may not be paid for it afterwards. Service departments are "for profit" businesses, not the Salvation Army. Sometimes it's easier to tell the customer the repair is not covered under warranty to save the dealership any potential loss. I can't tell you how many times I watched customers try to squeeze anything and everything under warranty. The stories I could tell. Bottom line? Dealerships have to protect themselves.

Right or wrong....this is how it works. And it's not just a "Toyota thing" either. All dealerships work this way from time to time. That said...calling customer care was the right thing to do. Another thing to do is to try and get a regional rep involved while the vehicle is at the dealership. Often times a rep can look at a vehicle and quickly determine that the issue can be warrantied.

Glad to hear it will be covererd.

Now let the flaming of me begin!!

And might I add that at least in the past the manufacturer pays warranty labor at a reduced rate from what the dealership might normally charge, they establish a set amount of time they will reimburse for for each operation and the manufacturer supplies the parts so forget the big parts mark up. At best it ends up being a break even proposition. And cuts into any profit sharing the dealership may have with its employees.
