Asus is not a great brand name, if you want a legit gaming laptop, get an Alienware, Dell backs it with a warranty. I only recommend the big name brands, Dell, Hp, etc.

Asus is a very good brand name, actually.

Alienware has good hardware, but you pay quite a bit extra for the "look." I would also avoid Dell as they use cheap parts and the build quality is poor.

Keep an eye on Slickdeals.net - I just checked and couldn't find any active deals at the moment, but something will pop up soon. Keep an eye out for Lenovo, Asus, and Toshiba laptops especially.

I really doubt you'll end up spending the full $1200. I've seen comparable laptops to the one you just linked for $700-$900.

I really like the Lenovo y-series. Here's an example of a recent deal:

    Good luck!

I've had my Alienware for almost 2 years now and haven't had a single problem with it. Payed just under $1,200 and it was worth it.

I've never heard anything about Dell using cheap parts considering Alienware laptops are Dell computers. Their desktops are great as well.

But Asus is another good brand as well as MSI.

I'm confused by this statement? It's not great for playing games, but then you don't want to run at high settings?

What kind of games are you trying to play?

The Lenovo Y series are some of the cheapest, yet beefiest gaming computers on the cheap. My buddy has the 14" version. The only issue I've heard about the 15" has been some people having problems with SLI, which were resolved by updating the drivers. SLI brings it's own set of issues. Perhaps consider the 14" model as well.

While it may not the build quality of some of the other brands, it also will save you a big chunk of change.
    Those are the trade offs.

Asus does make solid machines. I've used their motherboards for years in my desktops.

Most laptops are all the same when it comes to the hardware. Some use the same touchpad, speaker, hard drive, motherboard, and memory manufacturers. The differences are usually look, feel, pre-installed software, and out of the box warranty.

I, as well, think you need to strongly reconsider your buying habits.
Dell does an OK job at mainstream things, but rarely do they become a leader in the gaming arena. They bought Alienware to try tackling that. They are very proud of it and the price tag shows.

Toshiba is also very proud of their machines, and likewise, sports a healthy price tag most of the time. I haven't been overly impressed by the fit and finish

Until semi recently, HP was making some horrible stuff. around 2008 or so they stepped up and made some fantastic gaming notebooks. I have not followed them as of late.

Lenovo is part of a small company called IBM, which has only been around since 1881, and haven't really done much - after all, who uses ATMs or hard disks? Floppy disks are dead, and no one cares about UPC codes, do they? ;)
Ok, kidding aside. Lenovos make some of the nicest business-class laptops I've ever touched in terms of finished design. I haven't seen a gaming-worthy version, but they are what I lust for in an office machine.

ASUS has jumped into the notebook scene with some really powerful contenders, but early options were cheap... then they flooded their product line and made things really confusing. It's gotten better now and they are worth the look.

I used to like Clevo/Sager machines - basically, the silent cousin to Alienware, they would release cutting-edge hardware a few months before Alienware got the same stuff and tamed some of the rough edges (such as jet engine fan noises and enough raw power to start melting the case on early releases). Since they were essentially a no-namer, you got killer prices. Now, the deals aren't as great and it seems like they are a bit behind... unless having 3 hard drives in RAID 5 is essential to your mobile PC

For me, I'd seriously do my research. Warranty is usually not a big consideration, I've never had issues.
My brother had a terrible time with one of his Dells, which surprised me because mine were solid. For him, getting a fix could sometimes be a costly ordeal that was similar to calling a cable guy ("anytime from 11 to 4pm, sir")

It doesn't matter if you are just getting into gaming. Why would you actively try buying a computer that only lets you use the low settings? Race car drivers don't try buying the slowest car.

Buy the best you can with the budget you allot.

Not a lap top pro here but I have an Asus ROG 17 inch lap top and it has performed very well over the past couple years . Good reviews and super quick .
I have an issue with the USB plug on the left side which is well known for but its also a very easy fix
Check out what the guys are saying at the forum about the lap top you posted .http://rog.asus.com/

I work in IT, and in my clinics I only use HP products. I never have to call for support on any of them. I also work closely with a local hospital who uses nothing but Lenovo's, and they are swapping those computers in and out on a monthly basis, not just one or two, it's every workstation.

I have a buddy who has bought 3 toshiba's in a row, and it never fails, after about 3ish years, they just die, motherboard craps out. His most recent one fried his hard drive, I went to recover the data and there wasn't even a partition there. Finally got him to buy an HP, and it has been fantastic for about 2 years now.

Asus and Acer have dominated the throw-away market for years, which is why I'll never consider using them in a personal or work environment.

Maybe I'm the exception, these are just my observations, but I doubt it.
