I know this is a tacoma forum, but I am going to be installing a remote starter in my wife's new 2013 highlander. Any Toyota tech guru's out there that know where I can find the defroster wire at the fuse box or ecu, rather than pulling out the ac controls? None of my normal sites for wiring have this in their diagrams.

Have you installed the remote start yet? My wife is interested in one for her 2012 Camry. The dealer wants 3 hours labor + too much for parts. I am just researching at this point. Sorry I can't answer your question.

I looked in all the places I know of online and can't seem to find it either. I'd recommend posting your questions on the12volt.com's forum here. You might have better luck posting your question there if you haven't figured it out yet.

I installed my remote start on my Tacoma and did a write-up here on TW. Remote start systems with alarms are going to generally start at around $500 installed. I never looked into the cost to have a dealership do it, but I would imagine its going to be over $500. Sometimes you can find a good deal and get it for $400-$500, but generally speaking, expect to spend at least $500.

If you're just getting a remote starter without an alarm, you can get those installed for around $200. If you have any questions about purchasing or installing, feel free to PM me or ask me on my thread about installing a remote start system.

I will be installing this myself on both my wife's Highlander and my Tacoma. I went with the Avital 5303 because it has the long-range transmitter and built-in alarm. I have done quite a few installs, and the only way I could see doing it in three hours is with plastic t taps. I only splice my wires and solder them, that's why do these installs myself, can never trust what the installers will use.

Thanks. You might end up having to just tap into the defrost wire behind the controls. Its more annoying to connect it there, but it would work the same. Sorry I can't help past that.

Yeah, 3 hours with soldering? I'd like to see that. Best Buy uses wire taps on their installs as far as I know. Depending on the independent shop, they may use wire taps. Or they'll say they solder but end up rushing and use wire taps. And some will actually solder, but that will take longer than 3 hours.
