Hey fellas, I have an 07 Tacoma and it has the sliding rear windshield glass. I let my kid brother use the truck to move a TV stand and he decided not to tie it down... needless to say it slid up when he hit the brakes and broke the driver's side 3rd of the back glass.

I guess my first question is even though it doesn't look like just that section can be replaced, can it?

And if not, I really need to know where to look for an inexpensive one. I'm a student with kids so don't have much money to spare... and don't have glass coverage so I'll be paying out of pocket. Are there any well-known Toyota yards that would have something inexpensive? I called my local yard and the lowest they can do is 250. I looked on ebay and really don't trust that situation.

Are there any people on here with wrecked / totalled trucks they're parting out that may be able to help me?

I appreciate your time in advance and any help would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm in New York and it's cold...This is my only vehicle for myself and for the kids. Thanks a lot.

In my experience when you break one section of a slider the whole thing needs to be replaced. Maybe your insurance has glass replacement built in?

Thanks Scott that's an idea. I'm going to cover it for the time being. A yard a few towns away has one for 250. I'll see if I can scrape some dough together.

Dilligaff, unfortunately not. I go with the bare bones minimum liability. It sounds like you've replaced one before, what else will I need when I replace it? I haven't searched for a diy yet, just figured I'd ask ya since I have you here...

When I broke mine I learned a few things:

    1. If you break 1 panel on a slider, the whole thing must be replaced

    2. The window installer I used did not want to deal with installing a used back glass (he said there was a particular reason, but I can't remember why...something about the design of the mounting surface once it has been installed then removed.)

    3. Cheap aftermarket glass looks like cheap aftermarket glass. It does not look or fit the same way. Very noticeable on the exterior. (I initially went this route, then had them uninstall it. It looked like crap)

Disclaimer: All of this info was from my installer.

The last time I checked OEM Toyota back glass was ~$800

Not to start a fight, but why doesn't your brother man up and pay for a new window? I know if I borrowed anyone's vehicle, especially a family member's, I'd want to do the right thing and get it fixed better than the condition I receive it in, if at all possible. Especially if they were in a tight financial situation as you are.

I got a pilkington replacement window for $500 or so installed. The dealer wanted 850 or better for OEM glass and the cr Laurence replacement windows look like shit. The only part of the slider you can replace if it breaks is the Middle. Otherwise you have to replace the whole assembly
