Hello everyone, I have an '05 Tacoma (I'm the original owner) and I just reached 82,000 miles on it.
I now need to replace my original brake pads (the rotors are still fairly decent the tire place said) but I will likely just replace them too.
    As far as usage:
I drive 20 miles to work, and haul an aluminum bass boat, along with everyday driving. I've never had an issue with my brakes, and I've been told by many that I'm not tough on brakes. I don't really drive fast, and take care of my truck.
What are some choices from different levels of quality? I was going to get a set at Autozone for $130 for pads and new rotors, but I realize that I'm not getting great quality. I've also priced OE Toyota parts as well. I don't have a lot of money this month due to needing to register my truck, insure my boat, and get a new tilt trim motor on my bass boat. (OUCH!)
I could realistically wait a couple more weeks to replace them, but want to learn what my best options are so I need to only do this once. (well, not every year anyway).
Oh, and where the best places to get them too!
    Thank you in advance!

I replaced my pads and rotors a few thousand miles ago with Autozones Duralast stuff. Have had no issues and they have a lifetime warranty if I remember correctly.

I bought Brembo brakes and Hawk LTS pads. They are more grabby then the factory OEM pads and rotors that came with my truck.

These are the best prices I found after doing a few weeks of research:

Hawk LTS pads ~$59 for a set

Brembo Rotors (blanks) ~$100 for 2

Ive got EBC, DBA and Hawk systems for cheap. Have tested many setups and prefer Hawk LTS pads + Hawk rotors.

I just ordered OEM Toyota front pads for $77 and rotors for $57 each from Camelback Toyota online.

Why not just have the rotors turned? After 77k miles they should have a lot of life left in them.

    Don't go cheap on brakes.

Watch Amazon Wharehouse sales. I bought an extra set of Wagner Therma-quiet ? Ceramic pads for under 7 bucks a couple weeks ago, just to have a spare set in case the Toyotas self destruct while I'm on the road. There are a coup[le sets on there now I believe for 14.00 a set, they seem to have good reviews.

Just replaced my front brakes - Here is what I recommend. Keep in mind that I have 170,000 miles yes you read that right 170,000 miles on my truck.

I have never machinced the front rotors and never had a problem with them.

I have replaced my brake pads up front 2 times. The first time with OEM brakes and just recently with Wearever Platinum Premium Ceramic Brakes from Advance Auto Parts cost about $57. The first time, I took my truck was the dealer and they said my rotors looked good and did not need to be machined. This second time around I took my truck to an independent shop and they too told me the rotors looked good and did not need to get machined.

So from my experience, if the shop told you that your rotors look good just replace the pads. Ceramic Brake pads are probably the way to go and the ones I have mentioned are really good. No issues with my brakes. I would not toss out your current rotors if you don't have to. Also, at this point I would just have them check your rear brakes. Chances are you probably don't have to replace them. At 170,000 miles, I was still running on original rear brake shoes. I decided to replace them this time around for peace of mind but I could have gone with them a little longer.

Hope this info helps. Again, I would go with Wearever Platinum Premium Ceramic Brakes from Advance Auto Parts and order them online and pick up at the store to save some money. I think they are running a 15% off promo with $25 coupon. If you want to save even more we can do the refer a friend deal and you get $30 bucks off your order just send me your email.
