4300K HID Bi-Xenon Christmas Present Woe! Woe! Woe!

    I received a Bi-xenon HID KIT for Christmas and installed it today. Kit has 2 ballasts, bulbs and warning canceler modules with a "controller. Install went well in about 2.5 hours in a 2012 Tacoma Regular cab 4-cyl/automatic. As soon as I turned the key to the first position, the low beams came on. The stalk switch was in the off position and the driver door was open. Hmmm...so I turned the key to position two and all the annunciator lights came on (normal) and the HIDs stayed on. I tested the high beams and they work. Also tested flash to pass and that works. Turned the lighting stalk to the on position and the HIDs stayed on. Rolled the stalk switch to the off position and the HID lights stayed on. Turned the key to the off position and the HIDs went off.

    Both lights light up, there is no flickering. My son thinks it might have something to do with daytime running lights. I'm not sure a regular cab has daytime running lights. Perhaps it the large amber bulb inboard of the headlights. I'll check for a DRL module tomorrow.

    I performed the same tests with the door closed and the engine running and found the only way to turn off the HID headlights is with the ignition in the off position. I really don't want to run the headlights during daylight hours.

    All the plugs are keyed and have positive locks so correct polarity is a given. What can I do to correct this problem so I can turn the headlights off with the stalk switch? If there is no solution I think the kit will go back to the North Pole.

    I'd use a Multimeter to check the trucks stock wiring. Check to see which wires get powered by key position and which ones get powered by your headlight switch. Are you sure that you hooked up your wiring harness correctly?

    Yeah wiring is as it should be. Been doing a lot of reading and have come to the conclusion its my Daytime Running Lights circuit that's causing the issue. As soon as the key is turned with DRL, power is supplied to the DRL circuit which co-habitates with the headlight circuit. If I disable the DRL part of the circuit my HID headlights won't automatically come on with the DRLs. This is what I've read in this forum.

    I've ordered the OEM parts to convert my DRL relay/flasher to a non-DRL relay/flasher. I'm optimistic this will allow me to manually control my headlight on/off, running lights and high/low beams. I say this because currently,when the key is in the off position, I can manually control these functions.

    Several posters ask why disable your DRLs? Technically I won't be as I can select my running lights during the day with the stalk or turn on the fogs. At dusk to dawn on come the headlights.

    ^That makes sense. I'd be happy to ditch those DRLs.

    Update on HID install. Got a message from Retro Source (nice people) after asking why I cant turn my HIDs off with the stalk switch. He advised me to plug an OEM bulb in the connector NOT used by the bi-HID system and try the stalk switch. Ooorah!! I can turn off the HIDs with the stalk and the engine running or the key in any position on the ignition. The bad news, I don't want another bulb burning under the hood so I shot another email to Retro and they will be sending me a Moromito 50ohm 50watt resistor to 'fool' the ECU into thinking there is another bulb. Looking forward to the package and installing the resistor. Problem solved...I hope.
