This. And people only see the bad things about pits that were mistreated. Any dog can be aggressive and attack someone if they were mistreated as well. I was playing with a pit the other week that I was a stranger to. That pit was really sweet and playful. I liked the pit so much, I plan on getting one someday in the near future. They're awesome dogs.

I've met many pits that are really sweet, so I believe it's more about the owners than the dogs. One thing I can't stand is how they are mutilated by having their ears cropped. If pit lovers want people to think the breed is not aggressive, why do some owners mutilate them to look like fighting dogs? I can't stand it when it's done to Danes and Boxers either.

I totally agree. Any animal should be kept the way it was born. I don't like the look plus it's just painful for the dog for a while.

Pits like other dogs can be mean if they are taught to be mean or if they grow up in a home where they are abused and mistreated.Thats enough to make about any dog mean.If they are raised in a loving home they will be great friendly dogs.

In my area many HOA's have banned home owners from having them in the developments.

I grew up with people in this area that would purposely cage numerous pits in their back yards for when their houses got raided for drugs. Cops show up, they ran out the back door, unleashed the pit bulls and the dealers would take off through the woods. These were not my friends. There are poor communities with house after house that have this setup...still do. A single owner would have more than a dozen of them, and all of them were mistreated and taught to attack.

I do not think all pit bulls are bad. I do think however that pit bulls make up the majority of all attacks where children have had their faces ripped off. Not cool.

And, when you grow up knowing nearly everyone in your area keeps them for self defense/home protection, surely you grow up afraid of them.

Last year I was at my mothers with my wife and I had an incident with a pit that nearly made me crap my pants. I was about to leave, got in my car and closed the door. Wife opens her door to get in an a massive pit jumped in the passengers seat, looked me right in the eyes and licked my face. It seemed innocent enough, but knowing how people sometimes treat them, I feared for my life.

Oh totally. Cats hate me. Useless little bastards. Only ever met two cats EVER that didn't bite or scratch me when I got close to them. Dogs are far superior is every way. They're the best. Dogs are affectionate and stuff. And they don't look silly when they're on a leash.

My good buddy had pits all through high school, she would hear me drive down the street hop the fence and dart to my door and sit until I got out and was so affectionate. Like many have said you can train anything to be mean. Pits are put in shitty environments and bad areas where some have to fight for their lives. This is why so many dislike the bread. If I didnt have so many dogs I would have a few but I will always stop, chase, and help any dog I come across regardless of breed.

now granted, i know shes not a pure blooded pit, however, she is a mix.

this is my back lab/pit mix, Jett. we adopted her 2 years ago when she had just turned 1 year old. she was at a no kill shelter here in town and even had a warning sign on her kennel. they said she was horrible with children, other pets, and didnt like attention, thats why the previous owners beat her and got rid of her. she was "too wild and crazy and mean" they said. when we adopted her, the owner of the shelter was an asshole and said "ok, well ill see you in a week when you bring her back!"

well, 2 years later, she is the most loving, caring, and wonderful dog i have ever owned, and i could never imagine her as having a mean streak anywhere in her body

the following pictures are with my parents beagle and rat dog mix, my neighbors sheppard mix, our friends 3 year old daughter (who is like a niece to me) and the last picture just shows her personality that just makes me laugh every time i see.

I've had the sweetest rotty (I know it's not a pit but gets a similar rep) for 6 years. Loved him to death as took him everywhere. Then one day he turned on my other dog and he went to the pound. Sometimes good dogs can turn. It's not just pits, but any dog.

    Just my personal experience.
