Hi David, and welcome to TW.

There are lots of mileage threads so another one is just fine. Decent highway mileage for a 4X4 4 banger is in the neighborhood of 22 mpg plus or minus a few. The mileage difference in Summer and Winter blend gas usually amounts to about another 2 mpg. Heavy oversized off road tires and wheels usually knocks the mileage down a couple of mpgs overall, even with correcting the mileage calculations to account for the larger diameter.

What counts most is that you drive one first, to see how it feels to you. The 2.7 is a slow turning engine that pulls decently if you're not in a hurry, but it doesn't have much top end.

Personally, I like underpowered vehicles with small engines and manual transmissions for their gas mileage.

I get about 18-20 mpg with winter gas. Running 265/75/16 and about 75 pounds of skid plate.

Tooter has it right. Mine apparently gets better mileage than most report here, but that is probably due to old geezer driving habits.

It really comes down to what you like to do with a truck. If you keep one bone stock and drive like your not in a hurry then a 4 cyl maybe ok. But if you like to put rims, tires, brush guards etc then you'll probably want a 6 cyl. Because once you get done with modding the 4 cyl really won't get much, if any better mileage than the 6 cyl. I think the 4 cyl is perfectly ample for my driving style and choice of truck. But mine is an access cab 5lug 2wd. So it's lighter and doesn't have near as much tire to spin as even a stock 4x4.

My 2012 Tacoma SR5 access cab 4cyl 4x4 averages 20.3mpg year round. Best I ever did once was 26mpg during a summer trip. Winter months is lower of course. I'm very easy on truck i.e. no jack rabbit starts, quick stopping etc. The truck is pretty much babied and not battered.

I'm getting an average of 19.5 currently. I do about 70/30 city/highway and there are a bunch of hills where I live. The truck is s bone stock 4x4 access except for an aFe air filter. Also, the majority of my miles are on winter blend gas. I expect to see an improvement this summer as I will be doing more highway driving and on summer blend gas.
