Hey guys. First time posting but a long time spent lurking on TW. I bought a 2006 4.0L DCSB SR5 this August and want to swap the the stock limited slip diff with a TRD electronic locker. Both diffs are 6 lug... Sounds like a straight forward swap but curious if anyone has done this before or does anyone know of a better route I should be taking? Any help would be much appreciated!

Also will be installing a ToyTec ULK some time this spring if that makes any difference.

    Cheers
    Jake

For the money, get an ARB air locker. The 8.4" Diff in your 06 is much stronger than the 8.0" in mine.
I honestly think it'll be cheaper to go the ARB route.

Thanks guys. Looks like I have my homework cut out for me! I am collecting parts and will eventually post a build thread. My dad had an '85 growing up so its up to me to continue the legacy haha

Build thread in sig... 4-link long travel
if you keep your current axle. an ARB is best/easiest/cheapest. if you find someone selling an entire axle with the TRD e-locker in it, that is a very easy swap as well. but again, you would be moving to a weaker rear end.

You might check the classifieds, there is a gy selling an ARB already built into a third for a good price.

The failed rear should not be the 8.4 series since there is no bearing cap girdle that stiffens the gears from spreading apart.

Thanks PK. I have a few friends who are heavy duty mechanics and have offered to help me with ARB assembly and install. Should be an interesting project. Will post pics of install and step by step as I go... Have been looking for a thread like that all day!

Probably the shipping would kill the deal. But this is the easiest way to accomplish the job. Have a swap in built third to plug and play.

FWIW, you can see this is for the 8.4 since it has the supported bearing caps unlike the smaller diff.

Also, from what I have read, the ring gear sizes do not change, even though they are listed that way. One other benefit of converting an open 8.4 diff is the ring gear is 12 bolt vs the 10 bolt in other diffs.
