This happened the day after a snow storm. So my plate was covered. I will admit I didn't waste time getting past him but he let the speed go. I didn't even worry about the plate ticket.

Didn't mean to sound like I was bragging. Just stating the fact that it happened. That kinda thing happens everyday.

It would be hard to fight a seat belt ticket I would think.

When I was younger and getting tickets (mostly for speeding) I always went to court and entered a "no contest" plea. They lowered the fine every time.
I have noticed they tend to watch young drivers closer than the rest of us.
I don't have to tell you to always wear your seatbelt.

I don't see how you could get around the seatbelt ticket in any way other than to just wear your seatbelt. Turn on the little annoying chime if you have to, as someone else mentioned. The only time I don't wear a seatbelt is if I'm just moving my truck around my yard. What's the reason not to wear it? It could save your life. Not trying to really scold you or piss you off, but it's such an easy ticket to avoid.
As for the speeding ticket, I'm not sure how different it is where you are at, but if I remember right, they reduced a couple of my sister's (the crazy one) earlier speeding tickets because she signed up for driving classes before her court date.
Knock on wood, I've been lucky enough to have not gotten any tickets yet.

Guys it's not hard to see... It's plain as day in some circumstances. I don't stop someone unless I'm 100%. Certain light conditions or similar color clothing and belts make it hard but then again, I won't stop them. There is no such thing as training to look for seatbelts  it's called opening your eyes haha it's not uncommon to use bino's while doing seatbelt details either. I always make notes as to what the operator was wearing and color of belts and clothing also exactly what I saw...

There really is not mystery to seeing the seatbelt on or off!! We can tell from the metal buckle hanging, the strap that goes from the A pillar to the seat and around the driver, the strap across the chest (if viewed from front), etc, etc, etc. Sometimes is it hard to tell--yes. The OP asked about insurance rates increasing. Movers, like speed, are a point on the record while the seatbelt is a zero point. Points increase your rates. If you go to traffic school, then the charges DO NOT appear on your record, thus no increase.

I just got my SC working the other day. Got my first ticket this weekend. That SC is so new to me. And I loves it! Wallet probably won't if I don't let off it a little bit.

Where I live they'll always drop your first offense as long as you go pay the court fee and take a driving class.

Wouldn't it make sense for insurance rates to increase for not wearing a seatbelt? Are insurance companies able to deny a claim if a seatbelt is not worn?

Depends on the insurance company, but usually not. Seatbelt is a "non point" violation, which means it is not considered a hazardous citation (like stop signs, speed, red light). I have never heard of an insurance company denying a claim due to a seatbelt not being worn. I could see them paying out less than full claim maybe, but they would have to put that nuance in their declarations page. I have seen insurance do some crazy things, so I would not put it past them to cut a claim payment because of non seatbelt use.

I have a family member in the insurance industry, he told me about and accident. A car load of 5 people went over an embankment. All walk away except the father who was not wearing a seat belt. The father went out the window and the car rolled over him.
