1st Gen Sound Ordnance B-8PTD Install

Got a

$190 Sound Ordnance B-8PTD 8" Powered Subwoofer

Sound Ordnance B-8PTD powered subwoofer off ebay a few days back. Installed it today. Took some pics to serve as a walkthrough of sorts. I don't claim I'm an expert by any means, just watched a few videos on YouTube. Probably other, better ways to do it, but it's working

Disconnect negative battery terminal:


Removed the fuse while I hooked everything up


Found this unused firewall opening with grommet:


Pulled the grommet and cut an X in it with a box cutter:


Fed the power cable through that into the cab:



This is where it comes through in the cab, just above the gas pedal:


Routed it behind the pedal to prevent any problems:



Started disassembling the interior to feed the wires cleanly:
Remove this pin:


Pin removed:


Remove the 6 screws on either side of the center console:

Two inside the storage area:

Remove the shifter knob:

Shifter cover removed:

Pull the knobs off the air controls:

Pop the cover:

Remove the two screws holding the stereo surround:


Grab the cover and pull straight out:


After it came out, I disconnected the connections to the airbag and the cigarette lighter. Couldn't get the ashtray light cable disconnected, so I just let it hang by that.

Removing the lower cover:

Remove the screw behind the lower cover:

Lower cover removed, aux powers disconnected:

Interior disassembled, now running the power to the passenger seat:



Removing the receiver to get at the sub connections in the back (there are 4 screws here):



Removing the interior panels to route the sub audio cables:




Routing the audio cables:




Connecting the audio cables to the receiver's sub ports:

Running the remote power from the head to the passenger seat, using the same path as the power:

Decided to use the center console mounting bracket for the ground as it is unpainted:

Hooking up positive power:


Fuse back in:


Hooked up negative power and reassembled.

Not too bad, took a couple of hours. I had recently replaced the stock stereo with the Pioneer, so I was familiar with the radio removal.

 

Nice write-up! Congrats on the new sub. I've had one for some time, and remain very happy with it. (FWIW, my install looked a lot like yours. )

 

Great write up OP! I was wanting to install one of those Sound Ordnance subs, how does it sound?

 

I like it. It gives the sound a nice punch. I don't do hip hop or any other heavy bass stuff, mostly rock/alternative/punk, so it does well for that. Still not sure i have all the settings dialed in, as I don't really know what I'm doing, but I like the sound I'm getting.

Next on the list is a stock speaker upgrade.

Like Fuzzy, I'm very happy with mine too.

After installing my new stereo and replacing the four main speakers, I was disappointed with the lack of bass. Adding the B-8PT made a HUGE difference. IMO, it's one of the easiest and best bang for the buck audio upgrades you can do for our trucks. Highly recommended.

 

Just put in and tuned a JL 10w7 and man did I miss my bass

 

I've got one of these in my truck and like the guys said above, definitely good bang for the buck, however i still miss having a true sub.

 

Thanks Fuzzy, I don't listen to any rap really just rock and some dubstep. I would like something that wouldn't be in the way like a huge box in the back seat so I think the Sound Ordnance would fit me perfect!

 

Fits nicely under the seat. I think I might have to fashion some sort of guard for the back of it so that on the occasions I have passengers in the extended cab, they don't accidentally step on/kick the plugs.

 

Has anyone tried installing this unit in a second generation tacoma under the passenger seat? Does this work?

 

I know this thread is a little old but does anyone know if this (or any other self contained powered slim sub) will fit behind the rear seat in the 1st gen double cab?

 

This ones under 3" thick. Check the deminsions and see if it will fit.

Sure if you like replacing your sub/amps due to damage..

Just because you like the way it sounds doesn't mean it's dialed in right. Gain could be too high causing clipping/distortion which is damaging your sub and odds are unless you know what to listen for you can't hear it.

I can't tell you how many times I've meet people who said "My subs sounds great" and they are so distorted I'm shocked they haven't fried yet. I show them on an O-Scope how much it's clipping their setup is and I'll adjust it. Night and day difference with the sound output.

I've seen some really good setups tuned horrible and the owner had no clue how bad it was until I fixed it. I'd say 90% of the installs that were brought to me were had too much gain set on the amps.

 

soooooooo many people think that gain= volume knob. i know of a shop that charges for installs that just crank that fucker up.

 

You are 100% right about Gain being a volume knob. Drives me up the wall when I see shops, *cough audio express cough* run the gain at 90% or higher.


I just recently started doing tuning for people with an Oscilloscope so they can see the clipping that's going on. Best tool I have for car audio installs.

 

if i did it more often id get a smd dd-1. can find em on ebay pretty cheap.
