I am very close to buying a local, one owner Tacoma Access Cab with 93K that looks and drives perfect. Very little nicks and dings. But my mechanic friend said he has run into a couple of 2.7 4 cylinder motors that have been extremely expensive to repair for the customer. So, is that just bad luck for those two Tacoma owners or is the 2.7 not a trustworthy engine or in some cases, very expensive to maintain. Also, since it has a timing chain, apparently one does not have to worry about the proverbial change at 60K. Opinions? Thanks for any advice you all might have. Oh, one more thing, we have settled on a 12,500 price which seems fair according to my research, but I have a bit of pre-buyers remorse that for a couple more thousand, I could have a double cab with a V6, which is what I originally wanted. Again, Thank you!

    Welcome to TW

the 2.7 is a great little motor... HOWEVER, if you're settling to get the 4 banger access cab instead of the double cab V6, you'll never be happy.

don't settle... get what you want.... it's no fun paying for something you don't want.

x2 on the don't settle and get what you want. I can't count how many times someone has asked me why didn't I get a double cab, I respond with "because I wanted an access cab and I'm the one paying the truck payment."
