My home defense guns will be my 45 Springfield and my soon to come Mossberg 12gauge. Like you said I think I have it figured out, I just wanted to post and see what everyone else thought.

I will have to try out a lever gun (the friend I mentioned in the first post wants one so I will try his out when he buys one)

Honestly if it was worth it I would get a 7.62x39 AR. I did a quick little read up on them and apparently nobody has made a good one yet. I guess they are unreliable and like to jam?

That would be the best of both worlds, a really nice round, cheap and easy to get with the platform and uni versatility of an AR. I get sad everytime I go to gun shows because half the show is AR parts and accessories and I think that's why I want one. It's like the Honda Civic/ Ford Mustang of guns. If you want to do something to one, somebody already makes it

Lever guns are fun to shoot, and they come from mild to wild. I have a 45/70 that whn loaded with buffalo bore will knock you on your ass. A short 1894 44 mag carbine is a wicked little gun. And the marlin 335 30-30 has killed more deer then anything in this country.

Filling in your gaps. check out a 22-250, and 25-06 as well as 7mm08.

this is what my closet looks like
    22lr 10-22
    22lr Browning Bl22 lever
    22mag Lever
    223 semi auto mini 14
    22-250 browning blr
    .243 Ruger m77
    .270 Browning bar
    30-30 lever
    30-06 browning x bolt
    35 remington lever
    44 mag lever
    300 winchester mag ruger guide
    45/70 govt lever

way more then i need, and all bases covered.

Do you have any experience with the Hornady Lever-lution ammo? I've just always bought the run of the mill stuff. I wonder if it's blown smoke or actually more accurate.

For sure! I have a beretta 96 in .40 for the house. If you were closer I'd get up with you and let you shoot mine. I'm hoping since this is the first 'mainstream' .308, Ruger will get it right. It's supposedly built for .308 not an adapted 5.56 like a lot of them seem to be. That's interesting that they have been dubbed unreliable, never would have guessed that.

It was the first thing I checked into after shooting the SKS and Saiga 7.62. I was like man this bullet does some crazy damage and it's cheap! This would kick ass in an AR!

Come to find out all I could find was negativity about them really :( These are old articles and posts though. Now I am looking into more recent ones. An AR shooting 7.62x39 would be the perfect rifle for me. I am not looking to hit anything at more than 200 yard. If I can hit clay pidgeons at 125 yards with iron sights on an SKS 7.62x39, I should be able to scope one for further distances. Any zombie attacking from over 200 yards away is not a threat :D

Doing a little research on ammo and it has come way down since the start of the NYS gun control stuff. (not that I can legally buy it online anymore) but now I am really considering an AR

I looked into a 7.62x39 AR for my dad and found that if you want to shoot something a AK shoots (reliably) go with 5.45x39

The AR has a lot more options all the way around. From mods down the road to bullets. If the AR is stamped 5.56 you can shoot 5.56 or 223 ammo. With that you can shoot any thing from steel armor piercing to ballistic tip ammo in a lot of different grains. Accuracy is not even close you can cut holes at 100 yards with the ar . Some of my friend shot them out to 600 yards. With 1200 to1400 to spend you can have great AR. Go on stag arms web site you can find one set up good with longer barrel and all you have to do is buy optics and ammo. I recommend a flat top because it optic ready. ARs don't lose value, are easy to work on ,and remember speed kills.Look at berger bullet web site shooting into bone gelliten.
