    Start simple.

    Put some food coloring, red gatoraide, koolaid in the topilet tank. If the water in bowl is colored when you get home, you know the flapper is bad. If there is no colored water in the tank or bowl when you get home, the flapper is real bad. Change it.

    Sounds like OP may want to go ahead and shut off the outside electrical outlets at the breaker box too if it hasn't already been done.
