I'm working at removing my transmission and have run into a problem removing the manifold stays. On both sides there is a stay that secures the bottom end of the exhaust manifold to the transmission. Two bolts up high on the transmission and one bolt down low where the exhaust system connects to the exhaust manifold. I removed the two bolts from the transmission to the stay, and the bolt at the bottom on the exhaust end is completely hooped (on both stays). I've soaked them with creeping oil and tried tapping all around the stay with a hammer to no avail. They're starting to strip. I'm hesitant to try heat because there are sensors close to it.

Other than grinding the bolts off and opening up a can of worms trying to get the rest of the bolt out and re tapping the bottom of the manifold, it looks like I *MIGHT* be able to tweak the stays out a bit and maybe scrape the transmission past them enough to get past the input shaft and then lower...not sure.... Does anybody have any advice on this? I'm going to take a breather from this step and go on to the next step and remove the starter and try to clear my head.

I really wish I had the cash to have paid to get this done (changing clutch). Or that they manufactured vehicles easier to maintain. Grrrr.

Judging by the pictures , I think you have no choice but to torch them off or hammer a 6 point socket onto the bolt head and heat the ear of the exhaust flange until you break the bolts loose . Looks like you might need vice grips at this point .Is there a nutt on the back side of the bolts or is the bolt threaded into the exhaust flange ?
Can you not grab a chunk of metal to deflect the heat away from the various sensors ?
How about a recip saw with a steel blade ?

Thanks guys. My friend that is a real mechanic is bringing over his stripped bolt sockets. I'm able to shield the sensors from the heat, so hopefully we can make some progress. Getting this bloody transmission out is a pain in the ass....Haven't even gotten it out yet!

Got them out, but one broke off. I have some work to do tomorrow...

Next problem is freeing up all the wiring along the top of the transmission and disconnecting all the lines that run from the master to the slave....my god...you'd think they'd make the wires all have pop brackets that can be slipped off...any tips from anyone?

Can't thank everybody enough for the help!

so far, URD throwout bearing kit(sleeve), weathertechs, 285/70/17's on Ion 17x9 and OME 885s and Dakars and nitro sports. BHLM
I remember those. Mine were rusted all to crap too but I soaked them for 2 days before I tried them and they were still hard but they came out. The worst part of pulling the tranny for me was getting it loose from the engine. There are 2 solid pins to help line it up that were stuck good. I tried wiggling back and forth with the floor jack while pulling back by hand to no avail. Ended up putting the cum-a-long around the rear output flange and hooking to the frame and while wiggling the floor jack and finally popped loose. I put anti seize on those pins before putting it back together.

Did you get the URD throw out bearing and steel sleeve too? Be a great investment while your in there if you didn't.

no I didn't get the throwout bearing. mine doesn't make much sound. wish I did though, would have been a good idea.

I still need some help. I can't seem to find the top two bolts. I remember reading someone did them with a super long set of extensions but I can't even find them!

Edit: FML this is a nightmare.

2nd Edit: One bolt to go. Think its the one up very top. So hard to find. I think the pictures in the book are looking at the bell housing from the front? Didn't make sense to me but I think that's the reason.

Flex socket and long extension .
Put a jack under your engine , remove crossmember and lower the jack down to a point where you can see the top bolts

For future reference brake fluid works wonders on rusted nuts and bolts.

Thanks, I didn't know that, but I'll add it to the knowledge toolbox!

Flywheel is at the shop, picking it up tomorrow. This is a very trying project, and probably the most involved I've tackled. I've been taking some pictures and stuff and I'm hoping to make as good a DIY walkthrough as I can make, with a very large disclaimer that I am by no means a pro, but it might be nice for people to have pictures so they can see what they are looking at. One thing that confused the hell out of me, was the picture in both the Toyota sheets and the Haynes manual showed the transmission bolts looking from the front end of the vehicle, which is not how you are looking at them to taking it out.
