Hello, long time lurker first time poster.

I have always lusted over the Toyota Tacoma since before i could drive. I have always owned GMC 1500 or 2500HD trucks and currently own a Yukon.
In the spring i would like to buy a new truck as i miss having a bed.
The new GM trucks really don't do it for me and i do not like the idea of the 5.3 shutting cylinders off to save gas...plus the trucks are too technology driven for me (i am old school and hate back up cameras and lane sensors, bluetooth, etc.) plus i like the smaller size of the Tacoma.

The only Con i can find on the Tacoma is the frame rust issue. I live in NW Indiana 45 minutes from Chicago so we get snow and drive on salty roads.
I do not drive a whole lot (5k-7k miles per year). And i would like to keep the truck for a while.
How widespread is the rust issue? Would it be a deal breaker for you?

    Thanks,
    Jon

If you coat your frame and take care of it, it will in turn take care for you man.

Mine had a tiny bit of surface rust which I just sprayed rustoleum all over the frame and a year later nothing has flaked off and it's still black.

Just look it over before buying, and keep your under carriage washed.

The ones that fall apart are because of lazy owners. Every day it is warm enough for my hose to spray I am outside rinsing the tacoma off and hosing the crap out of the underside. I've sprayed the underside for 20 minutes straight and still come across areas where you see dirty and salty crap washing out.

Once winter is over for good and all the salt is off the roads I will probably be spending 2 hours under the truck, some degreaser to strip all the left over fluid film off, followed by a super rinse of every nook and cranny. That alone will probably take an hour or so.
Then I will be wire brushing/neutralizing any rust, painting over it with chassis epoxy paint and recoating with fluid film.

I guarantee you the underside of my truck will look 6 months old in 5 years
