So I just bought my first new vehicle, a 2014 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4. My wife and I love this truck so far. My first truck was an '88 extra cab and it never let me down so after we had a horrible experience with a Nissan we decided it was time to go back to Toyota.

The weekend after we bought it we decided to go for a drive and do a little wheeling. We went out to Kaena point which is pretty mild in most spots. Well it was raining when we got there so it was a sloppy slop fest. It was the kind of mud that just keeps building on your feet as you walk until you are about 6" taller. It was so slick that when I would try to turn it just went straight. Lots of fun!

The Tacoma did great! We scraped a little here and there but nothing too bad. Anyway, we got to the end of the trail and were getting ready to hike out to the point when along comes this olive drab 6x6 Pinzgaur. So naturally we stop to watch it. He goes around the loop at the end of the trail and into this mud puddle. But as he kept going into it, it kept getting deeper and deeper. It ended up being more than 4 ft deep and as he was coming out he got stuck. He had some tow straps so we offered to help.

I have had a number of trucks and Jeeps and 4x4's in my time and I have pushed them all pretty hard off road. Given the slickness and zero traction situation, I didn't have much hope that I was going to be much help. But we hooked up anyway and gave it a shot.

He started up and was like "GO! GO! GO!" and I was like "This is my brand new truck... I'll go how I WANT to go!"

And I did. I put it in 4L and just took it real easy. To my complete astonishment the truck went! It pulled that beastly 6 wheel drive portal axled monster right out!

All I have to say is the traction control system on the TRD Sport ROCKS! My last Jeep had ARB lockers and a 350 and I don't think it would have pulled this thing out as easy as the bone stock Tacoma. I think the traction control is as good if not better than lockers and I am glad that I got the Sport because it is always on in 4H and 4L.

We are just so thrilled to be a part of the Toyota community again and to own such a wonderful testament to good engineering. I attached some pictures of that day.

    Aloha!

Thanks! Decided to join after realizing that virtually every google search related to Tacoma ended up here. Seems like there's a lot of Texas folks on TW. Didn't realize Taco was so popular over there.
