Anyone who has seen inside a few engine knows that a good synthetic oil does slow down wear and keep it clean. I use Mobile 1 10w40 or 5w30, or weight similar and change it every 5,000 miles along with Toyota oil filter at same time on my 4.0 V6.

You can use petroleum based oil and last a long time too, but change it at least every 5k. And when you start your Tacoma DON'T rev the piss out of it until it warms up a bit! A cold engine does not have oil where it needs to be yet!

I have a 2010 with 23k miles and although its a quirky motor that sometimes coughs during cold startups and sometimes ticks like a diesel, if I heard a "knock" or any sign of "piston slap" ....... I'd be heading straight to the dealer and demanding a new motor.
I've never heard of piston slap on a newer motor. Piston slap is not normal and should not be overlooked. I'd be investigating this if I were you guys.

I agree, its uncomfortable. If you search 'piston slap' here youll find a decent number of threads regarding the cold start knocking, in both 2nd gen engines but mainly the 2.7.

ANY new oil is good, just use the grade Toyota recommends as they've changed recommendations since 2005. After all, this isn't a Porsche 911. Mobil 1 is trash though, I will never use it or recommend it to anyone. I was tricked by people on the forums into using it on my turbo Toyota and it ate it quickly and oil temp/ pressure lights came on after only 500 or so miles. Poured that trash out and used Castrol EDGE and what do you know? No significant oil burning even after thousands of miles and numerous WOT smashes. Could be different for the 2.7L Tacoma, but im staying away from Mobil 1 forever. I get my 2.7L engine oil changed at the dealer, I think they use some type of part synthetic? Runs good, good mpgs, and doesnt lose any after like 4-5k miles.

I switch back and forth between amsoil and mobil one, but i always use oem filters, member did a very thourough comparison between all the major brands and after seeing some of the "premium filters" disected ill never deviate from oem.... just search for it, its a very good review....

Had an old 20R that knocked on start up and would go away after several seconds, Toyota warranted the engine and put in a new short block. The knock sounded as though it was a wrist pin. The truck had 80,000 on it when they warranted it. I use Toyota filters and Mobil1 oil.
