Check engine light came on. Went to dealer and came up 420 saying both cats were bad. Dealer quoted me $2400 to replace both. Bought Walker after-market cats and had dealer install. Was good for about 5 weeks, now check engine light is back on with same code. Truck only has 49,000 miles. Talked to Toyota USA and they said, my problem because of time frame. Any ideas out there?

My 04 had this code last summer. I tested the temperature before and after the cats, voltage/resistance of the AF and O2 sensors, and checked for holes in my exhaust. In the end, it was a bad rear O2 sensor (cheapest fix). Replaced it with a Denso and haven't had a check engine light in 7 months.

O2 sensors could be the issue also, try replacing those. Also, are the "Walker" cats high quality and 50 states legal?

I have no experience with aftermarket cats, but I have heard some of them are very low quality and will give nothing but problems. Hope you get it taken care of op.

I picked up a used motor out of a crash totalled 2004 Prerunner 2wd 3RZ and got the front part of the exhaust
It has the O.E. collector pipe complete with Toyota CAT (105,000 miles)
If anyone is interested in this gold encrusted unobtanium collector pipe PM me
wink wink it is illegal to advertize used CATs for sale but this is for the collector pipe wink wink and the OE Toyota cat may come attached for off road use only

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. Dealer told me I needed new cats so I just replaced the front o2 sensor and the rear one and 2 years later still no problems.

Thanks for the reply's. Yeah; not sure aftermarket was way to go; but the price for factory cats is INSANE. Going to check things out some more. Thanks again for the suggestions.

ive had this code sense i bought the truck. i tried replacing both o2 sensors and still have the code. went into master muffler and they stuck a camera into my cat and said it was clogged. $450 to replace just the 2nd cat.

waiting for my taxes to do anything about it.

does anyone know where to look online for complete exhaust systems? or even piece the bitch together online? i can use a friends shop to weld my exhaust together

just installed a magnaflow cat the other day after I cracked my old one. The old one was aftermarket installed from previous owner that was complete junk. The honey comb material didn't stretch the whole length of the cat like the new magnaflow. $224 for the cat and $50 to get it installed.

Where did you buy the cat? And is it 50 states legal (California emissions)?
