Different Make/Tread on Full Size Spare

    So, I've recently been running some 285/70/17 Duratracs and need a full size spare. I found a good deal on a brand new Bridgestone Dueler A/T in 285/70/17. Tread on the Duratracs is worn to about 11/32 which is the same depth as the new Bridgestone, so I think they should be close to exact on size.

    I don't think think it should be a problem, but there is the possibility of a flat deep into some trails, needing 4x4 for substantial distances. Since I have a mechanical LSD, I would rotate the spare to the front if/when its needed.

    How important is it for the spare tire to match tread/treadwear exactly with a 4x4 vehicle? Makes me think of all those smokin deals on 3 m/t tires...

    Perkins Performance Sliders, Warn 9000, Brute Force Fab front & rear bumper, OME/Dakar lift, full ATO skids and hi-lift mount, satoshi, Wet Okoles, illuminated 4x4 switch, Diff Breather.
    It wouldn't be a big deal if you're going to use the strategy you described above and ensure you are on a slip surface if you go into 4WD. I got myself off the trail and home on 3 A/T and 1 H/T tire before.

    Thanks! Did you drive a long way after the trail? Have to buy 4 new tires?

    Thanks. I bought the tire today :) Same guy had a matching fj wheel so no worries on backspacing :D Still curious what to do long term with a flat. I guess it'd be 4 new tires? :confused:

    I drove about 60 miles. In fact, 3 tires were 275s and the spare tire was a 265.

    The reason I lost a tire was because the valve got knocked off by a tree root or rock. Tire store was able to replace the valve and I was back in business.

    Hopefully they didn't try and sell you metal valve stems.
    Those are the biggest waste of money.
    Metal doesn't give and rips off. Rubber gives, collapses, etc.

    The metal valve stems are not for an offroad truck unless you have beadlocks.
    Just my 2 cents.
