6" lift killing brakes or am I getting robbed?!?!?

    Hey Guys,

    the facts:

    At approximately 8,000 miles I got a 3inch space lift along with 285/50r20 tires and rims installed on my truck

    at 106,000 miles 2 years I had my front brakes done at a local dealership upon the recommendation while in for maintenance.

    120,000 mile about 1 1/2 months ago I had a 6" drop bracket lift installed.

    today 148,000 miles I dropped my truck for new tires and some maintenance. they are saying I need to replace brakes (1mm left out of 12mm) and the rotors are showing signs of wear.

    Does it make sense that my first set of brakes went 106,000 2yrs and replacements went at 42,000.

    The dealership made a comment about the tire size but they have been on for a majority of the trucks life.

    could the suspension make that big of a difference?

    when the brakes where changed at 106,000 miles I had about a dozen other things completed also. any chance they just never did the brakes? Can I prove that?

    the oem brakes last very well on these trucks, depends what parts were put on when brakes were done. you should be able to tell if your brakes are bad or not by feel also, and it should have been very obvious when they were changed as in it should have stopped much easier. ask them to see the brakes, then make your choice.

    I've heard of the 2nd set not lasting as long as the initial set before. 50k miles seems to be about average for people needing brakes. I know a lot of people who needed new brakes at 30k miles, I made it to 70k and I think you are the way above average having made it to 100k on your first set. If your rotors weren't replaced or turned when you put new pads on, that could have helped contributed to accelerated wear.

    hey pugga, i see you also did the f150 5.0 mod, nice! but back to brakes 100k is a lot! even 50k is a lot for most. as long as were talking miles not kilometres.

    Thanks guys. I figured the dealership would replace with same as oem. Thus I expected a longer life.

    I'd insist they show me my existing brake pads.
    Also, have your driving habits changed? New job? more stop and go traffic maybe? Add a heavy cap on back? Anything change the weight of the truck significantly?

    This is an extreme case, but When I worked at a Chevy Dealership, we had a mailman that used his own S10 pickup for delivery. He made it 50K from brand new for the for set of fronts and then it was every 15-20K with replacements. Warped a lot of rotors too.

    Back to brakes though, I noticed the people who were running through brakes quickly were the newer models with traction aids. My 2007 didn't have any of that and the fronts lasted to 70k miles and I never had to touch the rears. I did a lot of mixed driving, commuting into a big city from a partially rural area.

    heavy rims and tires will also cause your brakes to wear since it takes more force to stop it. i have 69K miles on my truck and my brakes felt super worn. i looked at them and they looked perfectly fine (previous owner said he put new pads on around 52k miles when i bought it) but i wanted new brakes considering my truck wouldn't even lock the wheels up when i slammed on the brakes. i went with the Powerstop cross drilled and slotted rotor and pad kit. awesome stopping power now. make sure you bed-in the brake pads! that makes a world of difference. i also bought stainless steel brake lines from the group buy on here. those are sweet too.
