I'm assuming he meant just enough pressure of the break pedal to activate the break lights outside of the truck not the indicator light that comes on when you pull the e-brake.

Agree with him hitting the wrong pedal. He panic'd, felt bad, and use the Toyota's accelerating brake pedal recall excuse from a few years ago. I'm sure he feels bad enough without calling him out on it. I would just get the insurance to fix it and just verbally tell him that dealer says it was just an isolated incident and there's no issue to warrant fixing. Just another dad/son bonding story that he will probably fess up later down the road and you both will have a good laugh about.

Everyone makes mistakes--give your Dad a hug!!!
    It is only an automobile!
Trucks can be replaced and fixed-FAMILY CANNOT.
Had my carpet cause problems in the past-had nothing to do with the pedals not working properly.

Don't be so quick to blame Dad on this one. Remember how this goes, gas pedal-computer-throttle body. Did anyone ever have your check engine light come on with a code that you cleared out and it never came back. Computer error happens every day. This is why I prefer drive by cable to drive by wire. Glad everyone was ok.

That wasn't very nice. :( Seems to me that dad felt it was a reason, not an excuse.

When I first got my truck and switched over from my 99 civic si I did hit the accelerator while breaking on a few occasions. The pedal spacing was too close for what I was used to. I have a wide size 12 foot so I think that it was a combo of new car and big feet. Tell your dad your glad he's ok and it doesn't matter it was an accident

i was at a macdonalds drive through once wearing bigass boots.

when i leaned over to grab the tray of coffees, my boot twisted into the gas pedal and i burned a smokeshow right there on the spot. truck didnt move through.

it was a 2000 chevy silverado reg cab with the bigger engine option. that thing had balls. lame automatic but it would squeel tires into 2nd gear if you hit it just right

I did this repeatedly when I first got my truck, even without boots on. It takes awhile to get used to a truck you don't regularly drive...

The brake lights on the back of the truck... not the e-brake.

The only sensor the ECU has is the brake light switch.
If that switch is not working properly, then neither will the throttle/brake override, or the cruise control shutoff.

I look at it the other way.

My truck is a stick and I sometimes get my shoes fouled up in the pedals. But I also wear a size 14 shoe...How close together are the pedals in an automatic? Could you touch them both at the same time?

Don't know all the details of the OP dad, but all the UA incidents seem to be older people in the United States; just an observation.
