I'm in the market for new tires and want to go to 265/70's but do not want any rubbing. I have noticed on most (if not all) that I have seen with them that the front mud flaps have been removed. Is this because they are rubbing or just because the owner didn't like them? I have trimmed mine back several inches but like that they keep the rock chips to a minimum so I don't want to take them all the way off.

On stock wheels you should have no problems with rubbing the front flaps

well they are going on 17" 4 runner wheels which I have test fit but not with tires installed. the wheels appear to have very similar back spacing and clearance as the 16" steelies but I will measure to confirm

265 70 17 on a stock backspacing should be fine. When I went to a 17x9 rim then I had enough rub that I needed to trim pretty muchv the whole inside of the front flaps. The front flaps have that bump on them that had to go even with stock 17s but with a 2.5" lift.

Your wheels will make all the difference. +25mm offset, 5-7 inch backspace no problem. 0 offset, 4 inch back space big problems.

Not sure what 4Runner wheels you have, I have '11 SR5 wheels with 265/70/17 and they are fine. They have about .75 less backspacing than the TRD sport wheels so gives extra room.
