OP: try a product called Ospho.

Rust will be a maintenance issue, there is no cure.

Ospho is a thin liquid you "paint" on the rusty surfaces. Don't try to remove all the rust just any loose scale since the product uses the rust to react with to create a barrier against further rusting. We used to use it as metal prep before painting on ships.

Really just Phosphoric acid (same acidic component in Coke)

Just coat the rusty spots with it and come back in a couple days to find that area all black ... no more rust.

No claims... exactly my point. No insurance claim = no accident. Proper inspection of a vehicle before purchase is key. These days people pay for or get for free a silly carfax but never have a mechanic look over things.

    Mechanical inspection > carfartx

Dude, I wouldn't say it if I didn't know it. Disconnecting the ODO on these trucks takes 2 minutes and 1 of them is used up popping the hood. It's one wire harness that is EASILY accessible. I'm obviously not going to give anyone directions on how to do it, but it's so easy a drunken monkey could do it. Oh and the computer never knows so there is no way for anyone reading the black box to know the ODO has been messed with. It's a commonly used tact for people with leased Tacoma's.

No salt on the roads here in Florida..Except by the ocean. However the paint and such on the frame and undercarriage parts on my '09 does seem thin. I had some surface rust begin and I've sprayed the whole thing with rubberized undercoating. It was all kind of a dull gray paint or coating and was not evenly applied.

Before I bought mine, I drove a new Chevy 4x4 short bed, it had bed bolts that looked like that at the dealership! I don't know if some don't get proper zinc plating or what, since my 8 year old truck doesn't have the rust, while others whither away.
On the other hand my roof rusted out due to some mysterious previous damage.
I'd get on the ball, prep, convert it and stay vigilant. The trucks are great, and worth the effort to keep them healthy.

Same thought I had. With the hurricane last year...

I'd look under the dash, at attachment bolts/studs for the brake and accelerator system, under the seats (look at springs, spring clips, rails), and under the console (shift mechanism, parking cables).

I checked last night. Nothing....It's clean as a whistle! I also noticed that its worse in the rear. I'm thinking now that the previous owner put his boat in the water a good bit. There is hardly any signs under the engine.

Seems excessive for the mileage. As some have said you could use something like fluid film to slow it down. I try to wash my undercarriage as much as I can in the winter to get all the salt off. Its hard when the temp is so cold though. PA loves their salt.

If your gonna keep a long time, undercoat it somehow, either a professional or if on a budget, I just brush on two bottles of Chainsaw oil every November. I wouldnt use paint or rubberized undercoat myself as it will soon after crack and trap moisture... making it worse.
