I am new to this forum so be gentle.
I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 4WD xcab TRD with a 2.7l 4 banger, I have owned it since it was new and now have 227,000 miles on it and it runs like a charm most of the time, it does surge a litte when cold but like me it's getting old so no big issue. My question is about an engine replacement, I know the day is coming and what I want to find out is if a 2.7l from a 2009 or later Highlander is a direct replacement for my Tacoma's 2.7l, y Tacoma is a 5 speed. The reason I am looking at the Highlander engine is because it is rated at 187 hp vs. 150 hp for my engine. Has anyone done this swap and what has to be changed, computer, etc.

Thanks for any and all help or advise.

First off 227,000 miles isn't a lot for these motors. As long as you keep maintenance up these things can go for much longer.

To answer your motor second question, no. It's not a direct swap. The reason for the more horsepower is because it's a new motor. It could theoretically be done, but why spend the amount of money that it's going to take to put a 2009 4 cylinder in. You might as well put something that will give you more power if you're going to go through that complicated of a swap.

Thanks for the advise PcBuilder. Just curious as to how complicated it would be to do this swap. You are correct on the life of these engines, I change oil every 5,000 miles and run Mobile One 10/30 in it and oil looks bright still at every change, not black at all. I have owned Toyota's since 1986 when I bought my first 4WD new and have been loyal to them ever since, only problem I have ever had was with my 95 Camry (2.2l 4 banger) that blew the engine after 124,000 miles, found out afterwards there have been several cases of blown engines with that 4 cylinder. Again thanks for the help.
