Awesome, thanks for the heads up TacoBrah. Looked at the thread for ULK vs. Icon Stage 1, and I agree, it looks like the reviews point heavily in the favor of the Icon. I'll most likely go with that one. I'm with ya, I'd rather do it right once. Ultimately I think I am going for an expidition rig rather than a crawler. I just want to be able to get back to some serious campsites.

The bull bar I have HAS to go. I was itching to throw something on my Taco when I bought it, and that was the cheapest/quickest solution. Time to do some research on front bumpers!

    Thanks for the help!

3" lift EIBACH coils w/ 5100's front, OME/ Dakar leaf springs w/ toytec adjustable shackles at 1.5" and 5125's out back. 33x10.5x15 KM2's Relentless DIY steel bumper.
There is a 3 leaf progressive AAL made by icon. If you have the money go with icon Coilovers but if you don't then getting a different setup like the ULK is also a good lift and you would be "doing it right". Just stay away from spacer lifts if you can. Also, if you can't afford to by UCA's you can hold off on buying them. Even at 3" most folks can get a good alignment. Now if your wanting your alignment specs to be at 0, 0, +2.5 (which is ideal) then you may want to get aftermarket UCA's.

Good deal, thanks Mainmoe02. Yeah, definitely not throwing a spacer lift on there... I don't want to do anything that doesn't better the performance in some way.

I'm going to put together a pricing sheet of all the components required for both setups. I like the ULK because it seems more comprehensive. Looking at the icon website, the only thing the state 1 comes with is the front and rear shocks.

Thanks again for both of your input, definitely starting to understand some of the complexities in this process. Don't know how I could even start to figure this out without the forum! Thanks again.

My experience: I have had the ulk for 3 years now and started off with the toytec 2" aal. When I first installed the lift I raised pretty high in the front via the adjustable coil overs, bad idea, it rode harsh and you could feel every bump and pot hole on the road. Since then I lowered it and it rides a lot better now. No problems and the ride is very acceptable. As for the add a leaf, that was a nightmare. The ride with the extra front lift made it almost unbearable. I did a bunch of research and got the wheelers progressive add a leaf. After lowering the front and putting on the new progressive add a leaf I am very satisfied with the ride. I don't have new uca as my alignment is pretty good, not perfect but pretty close. I have lr uca sitting in my garage but don't feel I need them. So my takeaway is the ulk is fine but go with at least a progressive add a leaf.

The ulk comes preset at 2.5" and the 2" aal added a little to much lift in the rear which settled a little and gave it a rake. That was the reason I raised the front to about 3.25" after I got the progressive aal which lifts the rear about 1.5" I lowered the front to about 2.75". It's about level now and rides a lot better with this setup.

Posted this in another thread but think I may get better feedback here...

Question to all you suspension gurus...I was first leaning towards the icon, given the reputation, but then started reading that they really shine on fast paced desert runs. Most of my off-roading will be done climbing rocks on the trails here in CO with some snow runs in the winter. Should I then be considering OME vs Toytec? If so, I've heard that the Toytec will be better than the OME because the OME gets lift by preloading the spring whereas the Toytec does not. If I got this completely wrong, please forgive and correct me as I'm completely suspension illiterate.

I looked at SAW and they are about $200 less than Icon, how does SAW rate in comparison to Icon and King?

BlgnTacoOwner did you decide which direction you are going? I am in Charlotte as well so I would most likely be running the same trails and mud holes as you would be. I was actually considering the ULk or a OME-bilstein setup, the icon route seemed a little much for the weekend warrior build I am looking at

I went with OME 885 coils with 5100 front and 2"AAL with 5100 rear. Front is set on second notch. Way better than the stock ride.

    Hey Jwilly!

Yeah man, I am trying to build a rig able to make it up to some of the campsites in Uwharrie, as long as my rig is capable enough to get up there and do some light to moderate crawling, given my wheel base, I will be happy.

I'm about 90% sure I am going with the ULK setup, however the ULK setup comes with a rear add-a-leaf, and I want to replace the rear springs with Dakar leaf springs rather than just adding a leaf. So I need to do some reasearch on how I can get the ULK setup minus the AAL so I don't pay for something I dont need.

Anyhow, I am thinking ULK for a couple of reasons. First being ease of install... The coilovers come pre assembled so you don't need a spring compressor. Install time from what I have read ranges from 6-9 hours even for the less experienced. This means I save on having a professional install, and I know how good (or shitty :) ) the job is. The ULK kit is also adjustable, where the OME setup isn't. Honestly I dont think you can go wrong with either... Then I was told to check out Icon. Now from what I have read, the ICON setup is defenitely good, and per the polls on this site, better rated. However it is also about $500 more expensive. So I'm going with the ULK.

J Willy, here is what I am thinking... definitely more expensive than I thought it would be. But I think this is reasonable.

Actually you can get the same Icon setup for less than $300 more. Stage 1 with Dakar and LR UCA's.

No problem...with the TW discount it came to 2,263 but that was piecing together the UCA's and leaf pack since it wasn't a build option on the Stage 1. I'm sure if you contacted them directly they could give you more of a package price that will be cheaper.

I was in the same spot, almost went with ULK, but after more reading decided to go Icon stage 1 for $300 more to get a better ride on and offroad. You can call in and have them add Dakars to your order.

Also, I would recommend to checkout wheelers, they have free shipping on some of their lifts.

BOOM! that speaks volumes, I've heard very good things from several retailers and my toyota dealer about the 5100's

After looking at suspension items I picked out what I wanted and was happy about the pricing.

Then I forgot about UCA's and DAMN, talk about expensive! $400-700 seems outrageous for a hunk of metal with a ball bearing inside of it..

Does branding on these really matter that much?

Also, heard some talk about flipping the U-bolt. I am assuming this is the bolt holding the leafs to the rear axle. What are the benefits of this?

I'm probably being naive but bolting something one way or the other still accomplishes the same thing (unless you are concerned about space).

Props to the ToyTec website, they make it really easy to pick out everything you need (i.e. go to the complete suspension for OME and add the top spacer, full rear leafs, and they will even assemble your coilovers for you [+$100])

Flipping the u-bolts gives more clearance under the axle. Don't have to worry about smacking and bending them.
