4th Gen 4R

Looking to buy, and wondering what I need to look for. We have an 07 Taco, had since new so I know my away around a Toyota. Just wondering whats specific to the 4R.

Is the V8 that much better or worse then the V6? MPG is not really a concern to me.

Can a 4th Gen be found in Manual?

Anything else, just ask! Front end of taco and 4R are identical for the most part, as well as many other parts, so no huge surprises switching between the two.

Awesome, I looked at some of the V8s, figure I can DIY the TB\WP if its not already been done so thats no turn off just a price modifier.

How is the 6 a 2wd selectable if it has a torsen center diff?

 

The v6 has the same drivetrain as the tacoma so you get the same engine/auto trans/tcase.
The V8 has a different Tcase and a center diff to lock into 4wd from the constant awd.

We own a 05 v8 limited, love it! Gets solid mileage even lifted on 35's, and if you're a fan of the sound of a v8, ours sounds great with a magnaflow muffler.
For the extra torque, I definitely prefer the v8 over the v6 4th gen's. We get pretty similar mileage to the v6.
stock we got about 15/19 and with the lift/35's we get about 14/18. A similarly modded v6 typically gets worse mileage, i'm attribiting that to the v8 having 4.11 gearing rather than the 3.73 and then having that extra torque to lug it around.
If you go for a v8, go '05+ if possible. Thats when they upgraded the v8 to vvt-i. I might add that the 5spd auto seems to behave much better behind the v8 than it does behind the v6 even though it's the same trans- shifts at much better times and doesnt hunt around as much.

 

Great info, I think I like the idea of a V6 just because it would be very easy with 2 in the driveway just to buy everything in bulk for maintenance. But hard to turn down a V8 with an exhaust especially if getting better mileage with a lift then the 6.

 

I see where you're coming from, but the v8 still uses the same oil filter as the v6 if that happens to be a concern (hell even the old 3.4 v6 and the 2.7L in my tacoma use the same oil filter as the 4.0 and 4.7) and when it comes to oils, it'll still be the same as well. Only differences on maintenance items would be the timing belt on the v8, and probably some different spark plugs but those are far from a regular maintenance job.

 

Doesn't sound bad either. And some quick exhaust work and it will be on point. I'm hoping to come across a decent one with some work already done but not so easy.
