So I'm new around here, and I have been looking through some past forums about what mods are necessary to get 285/70/R17s installed without any rubbing. I have seen where some people get away with it with a 3" lift, but others seem to have to trim some plastic to make that work. This is on a brand new truck. What exactly is required for that to work?

You're gonna get mixed answers. There are many factors that go into it from suspension setting to wheel offset and backspace to the actual tire (285 mt is bigger then a 285 at). Generally 2.5-3 inches of lift is needed, then if you are running stock wheels you will need a set of wheel spacer (like spidertrax). That's basically it, once you get everything on though is when you will find out. Don't worry though IF you have to trim it's normally only very little and if done correctly nobody will even be able to tell.

x2 Bullettoothtony is right on. I was contemplating the "trimming" part to fit 285s but it's not noticeable unless you stick your head in someones fender well and look for it. I also have about 2.5" of lift up front and got the Cab mount chopped to avoid rubbing while wheeling. If you don't wheel then you may not even need to trim.

I just finished this on my truck and let me give you what I found. Iam running 285/75/16 on stock TRD wheels on the truck. Just sitting stillyou will be rubbing the stock upper control arms and when turning you will forsure rub the control arms even with 1/4 spacers. I suggest(which I did aswell) is to get a set of new upper control arms and you will have no issues andyou don't have to mess with spacers which are a pain in my opinion. Istill rub the lower control arm when fully turned. When I say fullyturned I mean I have to turn it well passed what is needed to make theturn. So all you have to do is back off just a hair and no rub atall. This area is nothing of concern anyway to the tire.

Most of what you have to pay attention to is your spacing on yourwheels. But as long as you have a lift(I installed toytech eibachsprings, 3/4 top spacers and upper control arms) you should be fine. Withthe control arms you will be able to properly align your truck which is alsoneed just when you lift the truck that high. Now I have an after market bumper so trimming maybe required on thefront stock bumper. I have nothing I cantell you about the front bumper, but I do not rub anywhere else. No trimming either.
Basically you cannot just but the tires and lift and be goodto go, there are other things needed to make everything right. Do it right or wait until you can.

What about if I got some 275/70/17 BFGs? Would those fit with just a 3" lift and 17x8 rims with 4.5in backspace?

The tire will work. The 4.5 will push the tire out about .5 over stock.

Alright, and what about 275/70/17 tires with a 3" lift and 17x8.5 rims with 5.25-5.75 back spacing? I'm not real sure how back spacing works
