Is there a benefit to lowering tire pressure in these conditions?

Up here we prefer a narrower tire in the winter. I've seen a lot of posts here where users are lowering tire pressure. Most here will use a narrower tire (higher preferably). Less footprint, more traction (that's the theory anyway).

Here is an article with some information on this. I would suggest instead of trying to get more traction from altering the recommended pressure is to get the proper tires for the season. Nothing beats an ice and snow tire for ice and snow. ;)

Having a winter tire(not all season) is a good idea. When it comes to straight ice without any snow, gravel, salt, sand your tire isn't going to make that much of a difference. Below a certain tempature your all season tires will freeze(imagine a hockey puck on ice). Driving to the road conditions will make a big difference. Slow down, break early, keep your distance, always make sure you have a way out if an accident were to occur.
