ARE YOU SURE THAT YOU PLUGGED BACK IN ALL OF THE CONNECTIONS THAT YOU REMOVED? Maybe you also nudged another connection block by accident. Check to make sure that you used the correct part number and take the steering cover back off and take another look.

Are there any problems with the cruise or the turn signals? You may have a bad ribbon cable or as most commonly known, the clock spring cable.

I've not disassembled anything in there, and I've got an intermittent horn problem at the moment. It seems that if I mess around with pressing the center of the steering wheel a bunch of different ways, I can get it to work so I believe it's a switch issue.

Anyone got pics of what it looks like in there? Haven't researched it at all yet.

Be advised that the center cover is your air bag. Play it safe by disconnecting the battery and stepping on the brake pedal. This removes any residual voltage in the system.

The connectors for the air bag are a 2 part locking piece, they are a pain to get apart.

The pics I list are of a Gen 2 Tundra, but is essentially the same, for that matter they have been the same style for the last 15+ years on both Tacoma and Tundra.

You will need a wheel puller to remove the steering wheel. I use an air chisel with a blunt tip. I pull up on the wheel with one hand and place the chisel in the center of the sterring wheel shaft. 1 quick burst and the wheel pops off.

I just did a clock spring replacement on a tundra and did not have any zeroing issues. YMMV.

Yep, no worries on the airbag being in there - that one's hard to mistake.

Thanks for those images, I'll poke through the Tacoma service manual later.

From my quick browsing, is what I think I'm seeing true? Is the horn switch integrated/non-serviceable? Worst case, am I possibly screwed into buying a new steering pad/airbag assembly to replace the damn switch? :-/

No, the horn is seperate from the air bag. Once you take the air bag out, you will See the horn contacts. I'm sure the clock spring is the issue.

You will need a T-30 torx driver to get the air bag mounting screws out.

    Thanks! That's a bit of a relief.

    I'll report back with results.

Pulled the clock spring on Sunday. Definitely fooked. Pulled it out, unclipped the inner clips to peek inside, and saw a few worn spots as well as the cable folded onto itself at one end. There was a break in the copper at that point and the little flake fell out in my hand. Also found a little orange piece of plastic rattling around in there, possibly left from the holding clip when new?

Anyway, put it all back together for now and I'm happy to report that I only had to pull off the steering wheel one more time to get things centered properly. ;)

Steering wheel radio controls are intermittent now, horn is still silent, but the cruise still works! I could've used the horn the other day when I got cut off by some oblivious a-hole...

Just ordered a new aftermarket/OEM spec clock spring off of ebay (84306-0E010) - we'll see how that goes. 7-12 days and I'll be able to use it again.

    Cheers.

Tried to swap in the OE spec part, all went well until I reconnected the battery - the horn wouldn't turn off.

Ok, what's going on? Disconnected battery, pulled the airbag again, disconnected the horn connection on the back of the airbag unit.

    Nope, horn still activated.

I disconnected the radio controls harness from the clock spring, and voila, no horn. So, it appears that there's something not right inside this clock spring. Ground is getting to the horn circuit where it shouldn't...

Contacted seller, I'll try another unit if he's willing to send one. Otherwise, he can have this one back.

    Stay tuned...

Man.... if that one was wired incorrectly I'd be really scared to put another aftermarket one back in.... if it's wired incorrectly it could sent voltage to the airbag and boom... instant huge $$$$ loss and deployed airbag logged in the vehicle....

Yep, that thought crossed my mind but those contacts are separate and known good on my original. I can at least test against my original to ensure that there's no continuity between those pins and the pins in the other 'bundle', used for the other steering wheel functions.
