I also started with Win 3.1. Jumped off during the mid XP era. Been using Linux since then and haven't looked back.

I have an old G4 with OSX 10.2. It's alright. It runs pretty nice for the hardware it's on. Just can't see myself using it that often.

I've been doing tech support on every Microsoft OS from DOS version 1 through Windows 8.1. I want to thank Bill Gates for his lousy software, because of it I have earned a comfortable living for many years.

I'm relatively new to OSX starting 5 years ago with 10.5. I'm pretty agnostic to the Apple vs PC holy wars. Neither one of them is perfect and in an enterprise environment the Apple stuff positively stinks. One day we asked the Apple rep how we could solve a number of problems for our users. His response was Apple sold devices for use by individuals and we had to figure out or own enterprise solutions.

My work computer is a MacBook Pro Air and I really like the light weight. Mavericks is nothing special in my opinion, just an evolution of the previous systems. Windows 8 on the other hand is dogs breath. Whenever someone suggests we move to it I push back as hard as I can. The thoughts of retraining 12,000 users on how to use it gives me the willies. Many of my users are still struggling with the basics and they've been using the same basic layout since Windows 3. Why Microsoft did what they did with 8 is beyond comprehension.

My personal computer is a Toshiba laptop. If money were no object I would own a Mac, but at roughly 2.5 times the cost I can't justify the expense.

It was to enhance their tablet and phone sales. It gives users the same look and feel between all the devices. So if you know how to run the computer, you can also use the phone and tablets without any training.

It's probably a good idea from a new-user perspective but anyone who's been using Windows for any length of time will probably hate it.

My wife likes it but she primarily does internet only.

Oh, I know their reasoning, but in typical Microsoft fashion they are blind and tone deaf to their users. Apple does quite nicely with 2 different looks for their phones vs the desktop. The Microsoft reps know it sucks too. I've spoken with them several times about what a disaster it is, but they have to toe the company line, poor guys. Rumor has it Windows 9 will come out early, in 2015, because Windows 8 is the new Vista. If that is indeed the case I will continue the fight to keep my thousands of users on Windows 7 and cross my fingers for 9.

(BTW thank you Microsoft for being blind and tone deaf. The IT guy who likes having a job)

I don't disagree with you. They should have made a way for users who are familiar with Windows 7 to disable the interface.
