Should I change the oil more frequently than the oil light on the dashboard suggests? I want to take care of the truck, and don't trust the light. Is the light based on time, milage, or does it test the oil and report the need for a change if the oil doesn't meet some criteria?

Every 5000 miles, the light starts blinking at 4500.

I STILL CHANGE MY OIL AT 3,000 TO 3,500 MILES. I don't think that oil can ever be too new.
