Decided to try out my 4wd low in a snow covered parking lot to see the difference and ensure it was working properly. wow it really hooks up.

Anyways, engagement into 4wd Low was flawless and quick.
however when trying to change from 4wd Low back to 4wd H, it continued to stay in low with 4wd low beeping and flash.
I tried several methods of disengagement, (i.e. Neutral, stop, reverese, forward etc...)

Finally I left the switch in 4wd H, tranny in neutral and turned the truck off, and upon restrating i could hear a slight clunk in transfer case and the 4wd Low disengaged.

Am i doing somthing wrong. Can someone provide instructions for properly disengaging the 4wd Low

    Thanks

Try putting the transmission in to neutral then changing from 4low to 4high

I have an automatic, but I've found that if I shift to neutral and then turn the switch from 4-lo to 4-hi that it switches right away, but if I do it the other way around it's more reluctant to switch. I know some vehicles they actually recommend switching to 4-lo with the truck in neutral but rolling very slowly either forward or backward, but I don't think that the 2nd Gens require that.

I've tried several methods, but I guess I will be trying some more..

May have to do some experimenting and document all the different methods until I find a resolution.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

It appears patience is a virtue. I retried disengagement from 4wd low: shift into neutral, switch to 4 wd hi, let foot off of brake and wait a few seconds. And beeping stops with full disengagement.

that could be a sign of a bad 4wd actuator. if thats the case, you have my condolences.

that was similar to what happened to my truck in december, except mine wouldn't engage and the indicator was flashing. took it in, and robert's your father's brother, faulty actuator, which is a flaw inherent to the tacoma - so much so that supposedly Toyota is redesigning it.

i'm not saying that's the case, but if it is, expect a wait because they are all back ordered.

I think it was my own inpatience and technique for disengagement.
It appears to engage an disengage immediately and after trying it a couple times its operating smoothly.

    Thanks to everyone who replied.

    Cheers
