V6 Manual Transmission Fluid Change Thoughts

Hey guys,

Was reading through my Haynes manual and the maintenance section and read a few things I've never done. Does anyone drain their transmission fluid and fill it back up? Thought you had to remove the transmission pan to get all of the fluid out but they said just to remove the fill plug and then the drain plug. Anyone do this? Was going to change the fluid in the clutch pedal as mine is shifting pretty rough when cold so thought maybe the fluid has begun to deteriorate, would be surprised if it has ever been changed.

 

yup its pretty important synthetic will make it shift smoother, you should change every 30000 pan pullin is only for autos

 

The manual transmission has a drain and fill plug, very easy to change. I changed mine out at 30k and it looked pretty good, as did the transfer case, but the front and rear diff looked nasty.

Anyone know if Toyota will consider the manual transmission drain & fill part of their reg maintenance?

 

Hey thanks guys. In my Automatic transmission 4Runner things just seemed to go down hill after the transmission fluid was replaced. But it was an ordeal I guess. I didn't do it. Tried to find the Redline MT90 but haven't been able to on websites of local parts stores. Going to go in and look after work today.

$29 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 Gear Oil. It says rated for API GL-4, API GL-5. That makes me really nervous. People on here say that they use it with good results. But I would some other opinions.

The Haynes manual is alright, not great. But alright.

 

My six speed would forever grind 4th gear with GL5 oil, and shifting in general was more difficult. Switching back to GL4 cured that. I know the manual says GL4 or GL5, but there's a reason most manual trannies don't use GL5:

I did give it a shot and everything seems fine. I don't understand how it could have both rating however. That doesn't make a lot of sense. Going to monitor it and see how it goes. Probably will call my local amsoil dealer and ask him to set me up with fluids all around. Dirt bike too. Then if everything is shifting fine until my next oil change I'll replace it.

 

Redline MT-90 hands down. Best stuff for 6spd manuals. Its what i use. Change it every 30-40k and your good. Very good mesh.

 

Got redline on order for diffs, tcase, &tranny. Eager to try it out

I havent tried it in my diffs though, im still just using Mobil 1. I may try the Redline in my diffs in the future aswell.

Yeah it is kinda dumb. It's supposed to rate how much extreme pressure additives are in it. Way back when there was supposedly everything from GL1 to GL6, with each higher number meaning more capability of handling shearing motion and pressures between gears.

Nowadays we just use GL4 and GL5; most everything else is obsolete. Technically GL5 does meet GL4 requirements for lubrication so it can have that on the bottle. Unfortunately it's usually too slippery in a manual transmission (works too well!) and the synchronizers which depend on friction to work just slip. It can let the gear grind during a shift or it locks you out of gear until you rev-match.

Then there's the yellow metals of the synchros used in many transmissions that the GL5's additives bonds to, and with every shift a little more gets stripped off until many miles down the road the synchros don't work anymore.
