I bought a 2010 Tacoma new and I currently have about 27000 miles on it. It's a 4.0 liter v6. I am not sure if it's this cold winter in Western New York or what has happened but it takes forever for this truck to heat up. My wife's Camry is starting to blow heat at about 2 miles from home BUT my Tacoma takes 35 minutes before it starts really heating. Am I asking too much or is that the nature of the beast?
Anybody else have a similar problem and if so what is the solution?

Mine takes about 10-15 to heat up I'd say. It's always taken about this long so I just assumed its normal. If anyone else's heats up faster I'd like to know as well lol

I live in Texas, so I won't comment on how long it takes to heat up here. I grew up in Wisconsin and trucks always took longer to heat than cars. We would always tuck a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator ro deflect some of the icy winds to help with heating (just make sure you take it out before the warm weather hits). You might also consider replacing the thermostat. They are cheap enough you won't be too mad if it does not solve the problem (but it will rule that issue out).

I am a little leery of the cardboard in front of the radiator as this might screw up the computer and make it think there is something wrong. I might try the thermostat if I can figure out where it is. Not as easy as replacing the thermostat in my Chevy powered street rod.

Just to be cleear, the cardboard does not cover the entire radiator, even covering half will help it warm up faster.

I suspect that you might have a thermostat problem. I live in NH and this winter certainly has been very cold. I start getting mild heat after only a few miles and full heat within 10 miles of driving.

Is that 35 min. idling? If so try driving it. Mine idled for about 2min. this morning, I had some heat about 3-4 miles down the road, full heat about 10min. later. It was -15F this morning:eek:

if its taking that long to heat up you may have a thermostat that is stuck open? Its pretty cold up here in Canada and mine doesn't take that long to warm up especially if you are driving and not just idling.

Many Canadians do the cardboard thing with no ill affect. This is a good idea especially when travelling on the highway for long periods in very cold weather, you don't want your radiator to freeze up.

I'd say your thermostat is stuck open and needs a new one that operates properly.

35 minutes is WAY too long. Most likely the thermostat needs replaced. My 2013 in 5 degree temps takes about 5 or 6 minutes to come up to temperature. I am assuming you are talking about driving time and not idling time because that is what I am talking about. If that is your problem it will also increase your MPG's once replaced. If it is really cold where you are you might also consider one of these along with the thermostat change which also helps with MPG.

It's not that cold here but it warms up for me in about 5 minutes or so. I jump in and drive and every time I pass a gas station it's blowing hot.

My tacoma takes a long time to warm up too, my friend had a ranger and we used to carpool, that thing felt like it was blowing hot air right away, mine takes quite a while to warm up, I will have to time it one of these days.
