Anyone here play electric guitar? I'm looking at picking up a starter. I need a new hobby badly, as all mine keep turning into jobs, and I'm becoming extremely stressed and need an outlet. Any ideas on forums, brands, etc for a newbie?

HAMER has offered some outstanding imports in the not too distant past.

Look for the ones made in Korea a few years back (says so on the back of the headstock).
They're the best bang for the buck ($250-$550) and make an outstanding beginner's axe.

There are a lot of inexpensive small amps out there now that will cover a lot of ground.
Have someone at one of the big-box music stores demo a few for you before choosing.

    Good luck and have fun!

why dont you just go to the guitar store and buy a guitar... thats what i did with both guitar and drums.. you dont need to research the hell out of something like your first guitar. play some, and buy the one you like.

Yeah. Agree with above. I have been playing for 25 years and when I decided I wanted to play when I was a kid, I just went to the store and picked up something that was in my price range and looked cool. If you are just starting, getting the perfect playing guitar with the best action, pickups, etc is not super important.

Epiphone makes pretty good stuff these days, without feeling like you are playing something super generic.

A used Epiphone explorer and a used modeling amp (by someone like Zoom or Roland) would probably work well for a while and sound good enough to keep you from getting discouraged.

My first setup was an Electra guitar and a Rock Warrior amp. Talk about feeling super generic. Back then, technology in the music industry was pretty bad so you REALLY had to have the big bucks to get something half decent. And it had to have tubes in it to sound good (amp) and had to be made in the US (guitar) or else it was crap. Times sure have changed.

    Good luck.

I'm going to a couple guitar stores today. The best prices appear to be at Guitar Center.

Wow, those are really nice. One I thought was really cool was the Schecter Exotic's. Those are some beautiful guitars.

I have definitely been looking at the Epiphone guitars. Going to the store today to take a look.
