Just to document this, and maybe help someone else out later on. I Removed Neg battery terminal for a few hours last night and now the Up button works as expected, so far.
Looks like there is a side effect on the ECU though. I have the 6 spd, and for some reason the engine would rev between 1 and 2k RPMs when in neutral and coasting in traffic. It was really weird. It got so bad I turned off the motor while coasting and restarted it. After that it started to run more like normal, so I'll just chalk it up to the ECU re-learning shit.

So MetallicTaco, was it a radio issue or an ECU issue? You could have received a cross-wired steering wheel control unit. Also, grab yourself a freshly formatted USB stick and grab the most current Firmware from Alpine. The last two Firmware updates have tweaked functionality of the Steering wheel control as well as some better Ipod/Pandora handling issues.

Unrelated, updating the Navteq maps is a righteous PITA :/ Still haven't figured it out.

The ECU issue was a side effect of having the Neg battery terminal disconnected.
I have the latest 1.201 FW for the HU. So no luck there.
The up arrow functionality has improved. It works 95% of the time now since the reset. It did act up once and the behavior was the same, reversing tracks instead of advancing. If it keeps acting up I'll call alpine and bitch. FWIW I did speak with them, but they only gave me the same ideas I came up with

Hey I am new to this site and just bought 2014 double cab trd sport. I am looking to install alpine 928hd with perfect fit kit. I have seen all the post about the install. I have 2 quick question.

    1. My factory reverse camera is only in my entune head unit. Its no longer in the rear view mirror. Will I have to splice into the plug under driver side panel??? Or should there be a plug behind the factory head unit to plug into new alpine head unit???

    2. Is the pac tr7 so the dvd player works and all functions work while driving. Can I just hook the ground to parking brake to solid ground to achieve this??? I have heard this worked back in the day.

    Thanks!!!!

Not sure if your existing camera connection will plug right into the 928HD. It might or it might need an adapter. I suggest researching this more. You could be proactive and pull out the existing stock head unit and check out the connector. Then, check the inputs on the back of the 928HD (find a high rez picture online), does it look like it will fit?

As for the pac-tr7 this device relays the steering wheel audio button functionality, i.e. track up/down, volume up/down, source etc. I believe it is included with the 928HD.

In order to circumvent the "nannys" which lock out certain features while moving, you will need another device which tricks the 928HD. Check ebay for it.

Hey guys quick question. Is the perfect fit kit for the 2014 Tacoma bezel flat black or gloss like the oem etune. All the pictures I have seen they are flat black. Thanks!!

The pac-tr7 is so you have all the functions of your DVD player and some additional nav menu options while driving. It functions as a parking brake simulator and has a special trigger just for Alpine head units. I'm 99 percent positive that you're not going to be able to use your stock backup camera without physically tapping those wires. Unfortunately, I do not know what wires to tap. You'll have to do some research o on your part but it is possible. I tapped my stock camera wires and have a fully functioning rear view cam in my rear view and in my head unit. Good luck.

Quick update for everyone looking for this head unit. My local shop said they can hard wire the reverse camera. Also a guy on ebay makes adapters but he is having a hard time getting the plugs for this head unit to reverse camera. My local shop said the factory camera in 6 volts and they have to put in a 12v processer. Also the INE-Z928hd is no longer available for ordering. What ever is on the market or already made by Alpine is it. Alpine is coming out with a Z929 that has HDMI connection and its 1799. So if your thinking about getting one of these keep your eyes open. I got a great deal $1100 from authorized dealer with 3 year warranty.

Does anyone have any tips for cramming all of the wires and connectors behind the radio? I have the perfect fit kit and have done a test fit and it seems as though it is going to be a real challenge getting everything to fit behind the radio.

I had to cut some of the wire looms bundles. NOT the wires themselves, but the zip ties and wire wraps. Once I had the wires loose, I had to secure some of the loose wires around the sides of the compartment. It is a very tight fit and some wiggling is required. Take your time and if something feels like it's binding, take it back out and reattack. It takes time. Took me about 30 minutes or so of trial and error. It fits though. Good luck.

The easiest way it to cut out some of the plastic from the dash on either side of the head unit. Feel behind the plastic and you will see there is no wires or anything to cut. Just use a razor knife. I cut out about 2inchx2 inch on both sides. The wires will then tuck to the left and right of head unit. Take your time and cut alittle at a time. So you don't cut any wires. Don't use a lot of force on the knife just make several passes. This is how my local shop does it and told me how to do it. It work great and painless!! Take you time!!!! The plastic that was removed did nothing for the dash. But only take alittle couple inches

Yep, try to stuff the wires into the sides. You don't want any wires blocking the fan on the stereo.

Thanks for the advice. I did cut the wrap and wire ties from the wiring loom and it makes a big difference. Trimming a bit on the sides makes sense. I am going to install the head unit this weekend. I plan to take it slow and I will let you know how I make out. Thanks again!

I trimmed a bit of plastic on each side of the radio surround and it made tucking the cables to the side a breeze. The perfect fit kit snaps right into place with no problem.

Been a long while since I posted on this thread, since I still have the audio setup and did some "stuff" to it today figured I'd give an update. Since March 3 2014 (even before that), I've been dealing with my steering wheel controls not working properly with my Alpine 928hd HU. Just recently the problem got worse. The head unit would switch modes, change volume levels and even switch songs outta no where while I was driving. It really started to piss me off. I cracked open the head unit and checked out the apline steering wheel control box. There was a solder joint on the PCB which didn't look right. I talked with Apline support about replacing it, but it seems you cannot just buy the steering wheel remote control unit. You have to buy the entire fit kit, which is ~70 buxs. It's not breaking the bank, but seems like overkill for what I need. The support guy asked if it was within a year as it would be covered under warranty, I said no, and even if it was he would have me take it back to the installer. An alternative fix was to install a different steering wheel control box, specifically this one: http://www.amazon.com/Axxess-ASWC-1...&qid=1442437454&sr=8-1&keywords=axxess+aswc-1
Happy to report that I hooked it up today and so far its been solid. My steering wheel controls finally work reliably. Sad that it took over 2 years to finally excise the demons living in there, but it's nice to have something that finally works reliably.
As a quick review of the unit overall, I still really like it. I think that the navigation has it's issues and use it in conjunction with my smart phone (google maps). The sound is still amazing and BT works great still and I've been through quite a few android smart phones. I don't think they make this unit anymore but its still pretty darn nice. $.02

Overall pretty happy with this unit, but not too pleased with Alpine and their lack of updates!

The latest issue is that the new iphone 6S / OS9 will not pair with this unit. No Alpine update as of yet and doubt they will release one. (There goes my music and hands free!)

EDIT: Just some initial research...the issue may not just be with the radio, issue may be with Apple's OS. I'll keep you guys updated!

OK....for some reason the phone and radio sync'd the other day. Not sure why it didn't before, but everything is working now and I didn't update a thing.

I still feel that Alpine just forget's about a radio and fails to fix the bugs.

    Thanks for that.
I'm having the exact same issue with my steering controls, and random "ghost" button presses.
For $50, I may just deal with it, but it's nice to know there's a solution ready after I eventually rage quit.
