I didn't know there was manual network switches :notsure:. Then the switch you're looking at is what you want.

Are you sure that is for network? I've seen them for parallel ports, not for rj-45.

From the design, could be late 80's early 90's? Maybe does 10Mb/s? Can't find too much info on it.

Seems a lot easier to find than the Linksys EG008W switch I want to get. (I have one already, I like its design)

OK, I have offered tons of help and advice on Trucks, now I need help from the IT gurus out there.

I have a small business with a single computer at the shop.
We have a computer at the house.
Both run Windows 7
I want to set up a VPN connection so that my sister at home can access the company Quickbook files whenever she wants.
At the shop I have a Netopia 3347 DSL router.

I have tried to follow basic procedures, but seem to be falling flat on my face. I continually get an error 800 when sis tries to connect. HELP!!!

Logmein.com would be my suggestion. they have an option to do a VPN through them and it is a very easy setup.

Yes, but isn't that a one-time, one use thing? I need for her to be able to VPN into the office computer even if I am not there. A VPN is simple, I know, and free. I just can't seem to get it set up right.

nope, you can leave it on for the computer in the office, then she just needs to connect when she wants to do work.

:edit: nevermind. The VPN piece is $300/year. They changed it since I last used it.

You can still use their basic remote connection and she could connect remotely to your machine. The only issue there would be that she couldn't use it when you are using it.

Hence the desire for the VPN. We need her to be able to do what she needs to, even if I am in the middle of something. So VPN is what we are going to do. I just need help figuring out what the problem is, and get it fixed.

If I remember correctly, 800 is pretty common. Check your firewall on both computers, making sure to allow the VPN (Two or 3 ports that are necessary need to be opened. Google them to find out which ones they are.) Trying pinging some addresses related to the VPN

And give us some more details of what you have. Do you have a server setup?

Thanks. No server setup really. Just a basic Windows 7 computer on both ends. I know her router is set for port forwarding for VPN because her office computer, which is on the same router as her personal computer, is set up for a VPN with her company that she works for. I am pretty sure that the issue lies on my end, for the incoming VPN connection. I am betting I don't have something set right. I will post up what I can shortly....

There are 3 of the screenshots from the router. Can someone give me some basics on just setting one up? What is the CORRECT IP address that I should input on HER end for the connection?

what are you using to establish the VPN - router-to-router, or something software based on the client machines?
How have you entered the source and destination information - IP address?
Do you have a static IP internet connection at both sites?
If not static, have you established DynamicDNS and verified it is working?

800 is very common, especially when you use "automatic" settings instead of specifying the details of the tunnel. Definitely need more info about your setup to help diagnose. Depending on ISP, certain types of VPN could be blocked and causing the issue as well.

Here is a quick guide and video for connecting two Netopia routers:
Guide: http://vpn.expectable.net/
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8PtQBwYd0A

This assumes you have a Netopia router at both locations, if not just look up similar configuration steps for the other router model.
The tunnel has to be configured the same at both sites (not clear from your updates if you are doing that).

For source/destination you need to know if your internet connections have static IP's. If they are not a business-class connection they are likely dynamic IP, which means your IP can change over time and you need a service like DynDNS for a VPN tunnel to work properly.

ok, not sure on the static IP for the house, but I do know the shop has a dynamic. Set by the IP providor. They said if I wanted a static IP it would cost me more. (Go AT&T, wankers!)
As for the type of VPN, We are trying to use the built in Windows version.
Please forgive me for missing out on a lot of the stuff here. I have set up a lot of routers and local networks, but NEVER delved into doing anything with a VPN or the like.

Nope, only one Netopia router. The other is a different Motorola I believe. Same IP for both locations (AT&T with DSL)
