I have 1 cat 5 eithernet cable going to my AV set up. I'm currently using a manual switch for inputs to TV, Xbox, DVD, AV Amp. Would an automatic switch like the link below allow all to work without manual switching?

Every time I take a picture with an iPhone/pad the f-ing thing post up-side-down!

Not sure I fully understand the question. A manual switch for the ethernet? A network switch is like a smart hub. It takes one connection and splits it to other connections simultaneously. You would need one cable from you WAN (Internet/modem/router), and a cable for each of your devices (up to 4 for the switch you've shown). It doesn't act like a HDMI switch if that's what you're thinking.

Let me try this again. I have a cat 5 cable (Internet) coming from my router to the manual switch in my family room. That cable/switch provides hard wired internet to my TV, Xbox, DVD & AV amp. Instead of manually switching outputs I would like the have an automatic switch that feeds all at once. I find the hard wired connection is better for Netflix and my Xbox and AV amp don't have wifi connecability.

Would something like this work?

Yes that would work. I've never even seen a manual ethernet switch before :notsure:

I didn't know there was manual network switches :notsure:. Then the switch you're looking at is what you want.

Are you sure that is for network? I've seen them for parallel ports, not for rj-45.

From the design, could be late 80's early 90's? Maybe does 10Mb/s? Can't find too much info on it.

Seems a lot easier to find than the Linksys EG008W switch I want to get. (I have one already, I like its design)

OK, I have offered tons of help and advice on Trucks, now I need help from the IT gurus out there.

I have a small business with a single computer at the shop.
We have a computer at the house.
Both run Windows 7
I want to set up a VPN connection so that my sister at home can access the company Quickbook files whenever she wants.
At the shop I have a Netopia 3347 DSL router.

I have tried to follow basic procedures, but seem to be falling flat on my face. I continually get an error 800 when sis tries to connect. HELP!!!

Logmein.com would be my suggestion. they have an option to do a VPN through them and it is a very easy setup.

Yes, but isn't that a one-time, one use thing? I need for her to be able to VPN into the office computer even if I am not there. A VPN is simple, I know, and free. I just can't seem to get it set up right.

nope, you can leave it on for the computer in the office, then she just needs to connect when she wants to do work.

:edit: nevermind. The VPN piece is $300/year. They changed it since I last used it.

You can still use their basic remote connection and she could connect remotely to your machine. The only issue there would be that she couldn't use it when you are using it.

Hence the desire for the VPN. We need her to be able to do what she needs to, even if I am in the middle of something. So VPN is what we are going to do. I just need help figuring out what the problem is, and get it fixed.

If I remember correctly, 800 is pretty common. Check your firewall on both computers, making sure to allow the VPN (Two or 3 ports that are necessary need to be opened. Google them to find out which ones they are.) Trying pinging some addresses related to the VPN

And give us some more details of what you have. Do you have a server setup?
